Postby tone » Thu Jun 18, 2009 11:20 am

Hi guys,
been brousing for a few weeks now collecting tips and ideas and i have just got the first piece of my build....

... the doors! :)

im hopeing to make my TD look like its just rolled off a production line rather than make it look home built

here are a few pics from "sketch up" to get a feel for my design and ideas...

there shall be a door either side and a rear storage tunnel with a thetford toilet access door on either side to store a pop up gazebo

not sure yet if i will change things and add a rear hatch and gally.....

so to start i picked up 2 doors at our local caravan breakers,
today i made a start on the first door

here you can see i have shortend the first door
But the other half complained that it was not wide enough....

so i had to widen it, i did so by 5 inches.

First may I say, "Welcome!" :P

Secondly, I believe that from your post's presentation, my good man, that this tear of yours might well be first-rate!

Thirdly, I almost had to ask if that were a full-sized aerobatic aircraft in your hangar... but I see now that it's an R/C bird. Still... great stuff.

I like what you're done with the windows/doors! :designing:

What program did you use to create your plan?

Thanks, and, again, Welcome!

Welcome, Tone!

Nice job on the door and window!
It's good to have another R/C flyer here. I've been in that hobby since 1972! I have used our tear for camping at model flying fields for fun fly events. It works great, and I can haul the planes in it. Mine are all electric powered, so no fuel drips on the mattress!

Hi Tone,
I like the remade door frames Idea alot
I just so happen to have a couple of caravan doors waiting to be used.

I reused loads of part from an old caravan on my first build. I've used the chassis of the first Donor caravan as a start point for #2.
As it happens , I've managed to pick up a second donor caravan for £20, and it's full of useable parts, including a chassis for #3

Do you know what are the overall dimentions going to be ? height length and width please.

What are you going to tow it with ?

Cheers, Dave

cheers :)

the frames are held together with rivets and with plates on the insides cut from the left over pieces of frame, but i do need to re think it as there is some wobble in the joins.. i may try and tack weld them to keep them nice and stiff, i will try striping them down and build them into the cut out in the sides if i dont weld them, useing lots of sikaflex! hopfully sitting in a cut out and having a board inside the door will stiffen it up...

sam i am, thanks, i have only been flying 2 and a half years :) fantastic hobby! damn expensive though

jackdaw? overall size of the van or the doors? doors are 1000mm x 700mm
van will be about 8 foot by 5ish foot and dont know how high, will depend totaly on the size of the materials i can get my hands on...
the sleeping area will be the size of a IKEA matress, 2000mm x 1400mm :D

i will be towing it with the "tank" (E34 bmw touring) and when i get it, a smart car!
