Hello from Wilmington, NC

Postby old guys rule! » Mon Jun 22, 2009 6:26 pm

Greetings and salutations from the coast! Sunny skies, smiling faces and so forth. I love this forum - so much great information to digest. I too have been lurking in corners, gleaning as much as I can from so many talented people. I have committed to building...something. I do like the aluminum/woody look-very classy. I am going to take my time though and sketch a few ideas out. Ideally my tear would hold two adults and two small children. A galley is definitely going in and a/c for the high humidity we have here. I am concerned about the weight so I won't go too crazy. If any one has a tear close by I would love to see it. I'm particularly curious about the seams and water penetration. I also have a question about a drop floor: How much ground clearance is ideal? The drop floor seems like a great place for storage and/or a pop up table? I'm just thinking out loud. Anyway, thanks for a great site!

Welcome from Pa to the forum. Seems to be alot of people in North Carolina. Have you joined the TearJerkers forum yet? Its on the above heading on the bottom line. Its a social camping club and they have one for your area. That way you can attend a gathering and see different teardrop models up close.
Good Luck.
Bill and Marijo ;)
Hope to see you on the road.

Hi Old guys rule......you got a shorter name? However being an old guy, I kind of like it. If you are going to squeeze that many bodys into a teardrop, along with an airconditioner, your plans for a lightweight rig may not materialize. However, a footwell/storage area, is a good idea. Mine is as low as the axle and has never been a problem. I have a flip-up table that comes out of the floor, then extends out to the full width of the teardrop, so I can seat 4 adults with all of their 8 feet in the foot well. Try to post a sketch of what you have in mind and we'll pick it apart...........no, I mean we'll comment on the pluses and minuses. Good luck on your build, alum and wood, gotta be good.

Thanks for the welcome. Roly, my name is Pat - a little shorter. Do you have a pic of the table? I was thinking along the lines of a pop up table. I know I've seen them somewhere...

Regards

P

Hi Old Guy,

There are not many 4 person tears that you can use as a model... but there are some.

Andrew's 2+2 comes to mind. You can see the plans in the design library, up there in the menu.

Also Alfred is building a really compact 4 person tear, but that's a little too compact for my liking... check it out here...

Here's a taller version of Al's TTT, but some of the pictures seem to be missing...

Welcome Pat

Read "A Perfect Teardrop" The link is at the top of the page. To keep the trailer small and light, think about putting the kids to bed in a side tent. As Duane says, leave the door to the tent open and you "will be breathing the same air" but have lots more room. There is also a thread around here showing a small window AC unit in a flap of the side tent cooling both the tent and the tear.

Have fun
Jim
I need a new Avatar. I'd put my dog up there but she doesn't look much like me. She's the skinny one.
