Trailer cutting, 5x8 Benroy plans

Is the purpose of cutting the width of the trailer down 2 inches to accomodate a better matteress fit? Pro's & con's of doing this?

If you are using a standard mattress as we did we find the extra 2 inches at either side is barely enough wiggle room when wrestling on fitted sheets.

In the generic Benroy plans (5' x 8') the trailer is cut down from 60" to 58" wide. This allows for the sidewalls (3/4" each) to overhang the edges of the frame and allow a 1/4" gap on each side. The most common size of baltic birch plywood is 5' x 5' that matches the overall outside dimension of 60".

i had the same question. a queen size mattress is 60 in wide. if the trailer is only 58 then u add the inside walls it would make it about 56in wide. a queen mattress wouldn't fit!

i plan on using 1/2 plywood for walls to cut down on weight and then insulate the inside.

my add on question is... if you cut the trailer width, will that change where your wheels are mounted since the predrilled holes will be offset on 1 side?
