Facebook... is it worth it? I need your help!

I've been getting invitations to Facebook lately. What is it? and is it worth signing up?

I have fun with it. Can select your "friends." Kinda keep up with some of the kids that way. If you don't like it just "drop out." Cost nothing to sign up.

Learning a lot about my Nieces!! :o

  Oh... my... Gawd! I cannot tell you how common this dilemma is today - I hear it all the time. I finally put my name in for one person about a year ago after being pounced on for not doing it, and now have a backlog of people (friends, family, clients) that want to become buddies (or whatever in the heck it is). I share the same resistance and have not done anything more with it or them, but my name is out there and it gets rude after a while to not respond.

I have been resisting setting up an account for Facebook, or Twitter.

I fear a flood of SPAM mail being sent to me if I do. For those who do have accounts on Facebook, or Twitter, are you contending with additional SPAM?

Just another time waster for me - I check in every now and then. You can adjust the settings on your account to limit e-mail traffic and spam

All I did was fill out the form in response to a girlfriend that initially sent me an invitation. (Thing is, you have to become a member even from the urging of someone else to visit their site.) But because I don't have a full featured page perhaps I have not gotten an increase in spam.

I would imagine though that Facebook would be out of business if spamming was a problem. I also think that because you have to accept a person first in order for them to see your information, that alone protects you.

I belong to Classmates.com...and am trying to get out. (a costly deal)

Everyone from my HS has gone to Face book. It does the same thing.

Its free and Classmates isn't.

If you have a use for it, go for it.

If it becomes a problem just remember the immortal words of Nancy Regan

Just say NO

i love my facebook. it's great for keeping in touch with my family, it's also brought several of my classmates and teammates back into my life.

great networking tool. you can "hide" anyone who is annoying or posts too much so you don't see their "clutter"... yet they can still communicate directly to you through facebook...

great tool.

Go for it! I'm on Facebook daily. I helps me keep in touch with friends and family much easier. There never seems to be time to pick up the phone or get together, but a quick Facebook comment is much easier to manage and fit into my busy schedule. You won't get any additional spam, and you can set your privacy settings as loose/tight as you want. Most people set it up so only their "friends" can see their posts/photos/comments.

Social networking represents a major societal shift in the way people (especially young people) communicate and interact. I would recommend it for everyone. You can step of the technology train now, but it's mighty hard to jump back on later at the pace things are moving.

Try it. If you don't like it after a few months, cancel the account and no harm done.

Facebook is great. There is a lot of 'extra's you can do with it, but the main features that are worthwhile are status updates, photos, videos, messaging and chat. All the extra 'applications' are pretty much worthless (in my opinion).

Don't worry about your personal info being all over the net. ONLY people you setup as your friends see anything. If you are paranoid, don't put in your address, or any personal info such as phone number. Put in a false birthday too if you want. Nobody is going to take over your identity because they found you, 'Paul Smith' are on Facebook... they have no access to any information unless you choose to give them access.

We have reconnected with old friends and family via Facebook which has been great!

We have about 10-15 TearUp the ADK campers who are all connected on Facebook. Easy way to stay in touch!

Facebook uses you real first name/last name, so if someone just searches for your name, you'll show up. You can also just send/post a link to your profile, like this:

when I do that link with [email protected] I get a not found error.

Can someone tell me what the direct link to me would be?

Mike, they just started the direct link thing......it should prompt you to set one up.
