I'm considering a visit to Durango in the middle of July (so date in stone yet).

Anyone have a interest in a very informal gathering, as in we just sort of show up?

Anyone have any experience with any of these parks http://www.durango.org/RVCamping/index.asp?

Is there another park not on the list? Like a national park site?

Sadly I can't go, but Durango is beautiful! One of these days I'd like to set aside time to take the steam-train from Durango to Silverton. Sounds like an awesome opportunity for a great trip! :applause:

That is just what I was thinking. Mesa Verde would be cool too.

One of my brother's friends parents own a campground in Durango. I should ask him the name of the campground.

I live part time in Durango - so if there is any help I can give, just let me know -

My favorite in town campground is United Campground - right on the rail road tracks - if you want to go up to Vallicito, Blue Spruce is great.

I used to think of Alpen Rose as a big field with campsites, but the trees are getting bigger so its better now. I know everyone seems to stay there cause its rated high, but I think United is much more relaxed.

We have tented at Lightner Creek Campground and Cabins, and it was great, beautiful place. They have a few RV spots...a little tight for a big rig, but very clean and very, very friendly!!! Have fun...I wish I could go and get outta this Oklahoma heat.

I'd rather head to Chama, N.M. if I drive that far. Was there a couple of years back for 4th of July. :thumbsup:

I just googled Chama and it does look like a cool spot. I also noticed that they are about next door and could be a great combined trip.

WOW!!! I can't believe how close we got to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR without even knowing about it, in 2005! We drove right through Antonito on our way to Taos! Had our sites set on the Durango & Silverton about a week later, but transmission problems in Ship Rock cancelled those plans (spent 3 days in 100º weather in Farmington waiting for the trans to be rebuilt ...

...!). Had we known about the C&T, we'd have surely stopped, and gotten at least a partial fix ...

...!

For anyone interested, the National Narrow Gauge Modelers Convention is happening in Colorado Springs, CO, Sept.16-21, and a lot of the convention-goers will be taking in both the D&S and C&T train rides, as well as a walking/hiking tour of part of the remains of the Chili Line right of way (all parts of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western/Southern narrow gauge empire from the late 1800s to early 1950s). Since I'm now an avid On30 narrow gauge model railroader, I'm thinking and :worship:

that I can go early, do the D&T one day, the C&T the next day, catch the convention on the 16th & 17th, then head for the Glyphs II on my way home! If the Teardrop & Steam Locomotive Gods approve, and the creeks don't rise ... :thumbsup:

I can't see how anyone would have a bad time camping anywhere near either of these locations! But then, we all know that I am a little twisted ... :twisted:
