Camp Tonkawa Springs/Nacogdoches TX ...have u been there?

Postby Coca Cola Teardrop » Sun Jun 28, 2009 10:20 am

Has anyone been to Camp Tonkawa Springs just outside of Nacogdoches?

It's right out our back door and I've never been there......

Here is an article in our local news paper about it.

I haven't been there but plan to check it out in a few weeks.
My parents camp there rather often with their travel club. My mom never told me what a neat place it was.

The 68 degrees water sounds real good right now since we've had temps in the 3 digits lately.

I have. I loved the exotic deer!. The restrooms were clean and there weren't many campers. If there had been a lot of campers that needed shower/toilets it might have been hard to just walk in. The 2 or maybe 3 shower/toilet rooms serve the park. With lots of big self contained rvs you don't have a problem.

The swimming hole is a favorite for the local kids and gets busy during the day. The manager rides in his golf cart and keeps a eye out for noisey roudies. Nice big pavillion area and I guess they rent that out separately.

It is a nice private park.

Can't tell you the number of time I've been to Nacogdoches - Would have been nice to know that there was a cheaper option than a hotel.

Looks quite nice.

Sounds like a nice place to have a gathering sometime. We've never camped in that part of the world.

My daughter goes to college in Nac, and has camped at Camp Tonkawa Springs. She said the lake is real nice, and seeing the deer was great! She really liked the campground.

We had a fiberglass RV rally there and it was a nice size place for 30 or so campers. The town was a lot of fun to explore.

I camped there in the 1950's when it was a Boy Scout camp and have a lot of memories as the week long camp was the Highlight of the year for many Boy Scouts. Glad to see it being used as a camping spot that many can still enjoy. I plan on going there and camp and remember back on the old days.

There was some discussion in Cloudcroft about Camp Tonkawa Springs. It sounds like we might try to have a gathering there next June.

My mom said the Rec room is real nice and has a kitchen and bathroom.

Hopefully I'll get up there in a week or so and see if they will let me take pics of inside the rec room and showers.

Hi Bobby,
haven't made it over there yet. I've mentioned to quite a few of our patients and a couple of them went and gave me a report. They went on the weekend in July and said it was packed. Another patient said they went on a cloudy day and they couldn't get warm after they got out of the water. Turned the heat on in the truck for a few minutes.

I think I'll go on a weekday in a couple of weeks. School will be back in so it should not be packed.

Our oldest daughter is getting married in June 2010. No date for that event yet but I told her to get it scheduled quick. We have teardrop things to do.

Will post as soon as I get over there

PS...Woody, I tried real hard to get Natalie to have a beach wedding/teardrop gathering in Florida like we talked about. I even found an awsome campground on the beach. Fiance's mom even thought they would have a beach wedding. Oh well. Parents don't always get what they want. LOL

Hi Linda, maybe you could talk them in getting married in Cloudcroft next year. Mountains are pretty also.

That won't work either Woody. Matt has too large of a family to do the Florida wedding so Cloudcroft would be out for them too. Wedding will be in Tyler. I will mention your suggestion to Natalie but you know what she will say. "We are obsessed with our Teardrop cult thing"
Both sets of parents have offered them $ to just get married but they both said NO.
