Did you have any brushes with fame?

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

I forgot a few others, while working at an ad agency in New York:

Dom Deluise, when he was doing a Ziploc ccampaign for us. Big, fat, funny, really friendly--and obviously queer as a 3-dollar bill. ("Not that there's anything wrong with it.)

David Leisure, whom I wouldn't call real famous, but who did our Joe Isuzu campaign. (The "liar" campaign--"Hi! I'm Joe Isuzu. And this car is faster than a speeding bullet!)

Raquel Welch, she was older in the 80s and A LOT older now. An art director was designing the jacket for her first workout video. She was TINY, but big boobs, which was all I cared about anyway. Plus, she visited the agency with her daughter, so case closed.

Jesse Jackson, and Jerry Brown--when Brown was making his only serious run for president. I was drinking lunch at Sounds of Brazil on Varick Street in lower Manhattan (SoHo), stumbled out of the place to return to work, only to find myself face to face with BOTH of them, just like 2 feet away, where they had assembled for a photo op.

Obviously, Secret Service didn't care what happened to either of them, because I could have popped them both in a heartbeat. And while Jesse was talking into the mikes, I yelled out, and I swear to God...

"Jesse! You still owe me 20 bucks, you son of a bitch!!!"

If you don't believe me, just see the "drinking lunch" reference above.

(Sorry guys, but you don't have to be Republican to dislike Jesse.)

I'm a drummer, so it was important to me when I stood next to Kenny Aronoff while we waited for the checked luggage to come up at LAX once. He picked up his suit case and said "excuse me" as he walked by. It was a crowning moment for me.

Recently we got to see the drummer for Tower Of Power when they played a local venue. Dave Garibaldi came out and I jumped him as he was trying to get a drink of water. He shook my hand and was very kind/shy. That hand hasn't been washed since.

I've had 2 encounters....both while I was a geologist, in the late 70's....drilling on his property in Texas...had lunch with AJ Foyt in a dive lunch place in Hockley Tx....and breakfast with Jack Elam in Kanab Ut...at a coffee shop. we were the only 2 people in the Motel at the time....most people won't even know who Jack Elam is ....I liked his characters though... 8) Doug

I knew who he was. Excellent character actor. Excellent doesn't even come close to discribing him though. I saw him in an interview once and while his portrayals were most always of a grizzlied and cantankerous old coot on the screen, he was as gentle and kind as a kitten off. Neat interview.
Chris :D

The tension between what is good enough and what is beyond that creates the space for character to become our work.

I met Lee Marvin while getting a 12-pac at a local 'liquor barn' store here in Tucson. He was stocking up on supplys and my buddy and I helped him load his 20 some cases of booze in the back of his ol beat-up chevy truck. He didn't say much but did shake our hands and thanked us, and headed off into the sunset!

Gus,
Paint Your Wagon is one of my favorite movies, even though it is a musical, which I've never been too giglish about... I've probably watched that movie over 500 times. I didn't meet Lee Marvin, but one day after fishing I stopped by the Bluff Creek Resort and he was there. He was all tanked up, very loud and very obnoxious. He had two body gaurds protecting him and good thing too. That experience kinda quelched my desire to watch PYW for a couple of years...
Clint Eastwood can't sing to save his life, but he sure gave it his all in that movie.

PYW is one of my favorite Lee Marvin films too. Heck, Clint didn't do too badly. But my favorite was Lee singing Wandrin' Star. Did you know that Eastwood has composed music for 9 movies, including the score for Million Dollar Baby, which he also produced, directed and acted in? Eastwood made a number of recordings in the 60s, and sang a duet with Merle Haggard in Bronco Billy called "Barroom Buddies", which wasn't half bad.

Sometimes I pretend to be normal. But, that gets boring...so I go back to being me.

Did you have any brushes with frame?

Postby westexan » Sun Oct 16, 2005 3:36 pm

The Eagles played for my Jr./Sr. banquet 1972 - kept playing Witchy Woman over & over - My boyfriend at the time (attended Cisco Jr. College) rodeoed the college circuit with Roy Cooper (calf roper) - I watched Dean Martin eat breakfast at the Del Rio Holiday Inn during the making of the movie Bandalero - I saw Andrew Prine when I visited that same set in Bracketville - I have June Allison's, Art Linkletter's, and Glenn Ford's autographs from when my folks meet them in San Angelo while they hosted different Miss Wool of America padgents i- I spoke with Tommy Lee Jones in San Saba last summer - Though I never met him, I dreamed about saying thanks and goodbye to John Wayne when I heard that he died (strange thing - and I still don't consider myself a John Wayne fan).
