Apollo 11 - what were you doing

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Postby Oasis Maker » Thu Jul 16, 2009 10:00 pm

I was 6 and I remember my Dad and I in the backyard looking up at the moon one night after they landed and I was convinced that I could see them. He tried as best as he could to explain size and distance, but I wasn't having it. I knew what I was seein man... and that was them.

Funny the small moments you remember forever.

What cameras were taken to space on Apollo 11?

CD

Hassleblad... Almost ended up buying one of the special moon editions.
(Kick myself in the butt now) :(

I had one -- the Space Anniversary Hasselblad ELM. It was just like all ELMs, but had light grey leather on it, and an engraved plate. It became the down payment on my first house. I sold the camera and two lenses for $12,000.

If I recall correctly, they were going for 2K something when they first came out... If only I had snagged one... :(

! was sitting in Tip's, restaurant/bar at the intersection of Hgwy 126 & I-5 near Castaic, CA. There with the first wife and her aunt after spending the day at Lake Piru.
No clue how I had the time off, I was working at ABC in Hollywood and my department compiled all the paperwork to get everything on the air every day. When things went wrong we did not go home. Things must have been going right. It was much different with Apollo 13.

I bought mine new for about that price. The lenses aren't cheap, so that was a big part of the 12K sale price. I sold the camera, lenses a Polaroid back and a Zero-Halliburton case for $12,000.

I'd estimate that the camera was about $3,000 to $3,500 of that total.

CD

BTW, the cheapest Hasselblad Digital camera today is $18,000.

I was brewing in my mommy's belly. And my father's mother died the day before they landed on the moon.

Our family was on a 2 week camping trip out west. I was 15 years old. We had the 63 Chevy wagon packed with gear and kids. As we drove down the main street in Ouray Colorado. Coming at us from the other direction were people we knew from our neighborhood back home near Chicago. We turned around and chased them down. Turned out they had a summer place there. We were invited back to their place where we watched the moon landing on an old black and white TV with a round screen. It was awesome. The next day we were treated to some Jeepin in the mountains. Must be where I got the bug. Just took 35 years to get my own.

I was taking part in The 7th National Jamboree with the Boy Scouts at Faragut State Park Idaho. There was 41,000 Boy Scouts in attendance. One night we had a camp wide camp fire with all 41,000 scouts and had a candle lighting ceremony and it included a voice message over the PA system from Neil Armstrong saying hello to all the scouts from the moon to the 7th National Jamboree on Earth! That was a real memory maker! And a real priviledge.

I was doing central control for the sports car races at War Bonnet Raceway.

When it was announced on the radio, the races were stopped and it was

played over the loud speaker so everyone could hear it. The next day was

our middle boys 13th birthday. Boy am I old.

I was on my year long camping trip to S.E. Asia. We did not even hear about it for over a week after they landed. To be honest we did not care about it at the time. Too busy trying not to get shot.

This past weekend we got on the Metro and headed down to the Air&Space Museum to visit the LEM and the Apollo Exhibit.

They had a great exhbit by Alan Bean - 4th man to walk on the moon. And is now a artist. Check it out

http://www.nasm.si.edu/exhibitions/gal211/alanbean.cfm

Something to see.

We also understand that they reconditioned the LEM that is on display. Although the one at the Air&Space did not go into service - when you see it - you can see how great our engineering is. Check this out

If you come down to DC please visit this museum
