Hello, Newbie from Ontario, Canada

Postby HABSFAN2006 » Sun Jul 05, 2009 8:06 pm

Happy to have found this forum.

Any presense from Canada / Ontario / Quebec??

I am new to forums, I think the whole idea of sharing information, pictures, and comments is excellent. I am an avide DIY'er, and like to build things.

Along with some help... I have built three home built teardrop trailers, and I am presently on the final touches of my third teardrop.
I look forward to searching through pictures here, and getting some ideas for finishing my galley.
This is my favorite so far, being a 5 x 10 construction, galley at the back,
12v supply throughout, stained wood interior, and all aluminum exterior.
I do plan to sell this teardrop at some point as the family will be getting one new member very soon, and I could not use it to it's full potential.

I believe I might be able to help out also with anyone wanting to build/in building stage that might have some questions...

Look forward to sharing soon! :)

Quite a few of us from Ontario actually! We also have a big campout each year 3 hours south of Ottawa at Fish Creek. See the thread http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=25870 . There are a handful of us from Ottawa, Cornwall, Kingston, Whitby, Waterloo, Barrie, Brighton, and Brampton. See http://tearuptheadk.com/participants.html for a list.

Cheers!

Thanks for the reply, actually, last summer I had planned to attend, but delays in my home construction took time away from finishing my teardrop to be ready in time, I might attend next year.
I saw in a previous post you camp at Bon Echo? I have camped there two or three times with my tear and always attract lots of interested campers !

Hello fellow Cannuck. I just recently joined the forum and I could say this is the forum is the most informative I've seen. I just took a look at your album and I am interested in seeing more pics of the the second teardrop.

I'm looking at at utility type teardrop with a galley that can be removable. I'd like to know more about this type, general dimensions, weight and pictures.

Looking forward to hopefully have a teardrop of my own.

Welcome aboard! It's hard to believe you could build 3 teardrops before you found this site! We await somewhat impatiently for more photos.
God Bless

cliff, I have bought parts from all the common people around here, and have gotten tons of info off the net since -05,

Hey Habfan2006,

I just saw some of you pics. The Bon Echo pic and the "home build TD" pics is the the style that I'm looking for. What is the general dimension of the one you built? I see that a Ford Mustang is towing that TD. Do you have any interior pics on that one and perhaps the overall weight.

What is the interior bed dimensions and height? I think that will work for my 'utility/TD with removable galley.

Also where about near Ottawa are you located. My wife and I are heading to the family cottage in a week near Prescott. Maybe we can meeting up?

hi kukiman,

that teardrop is a 4x8 size. basically a 4x8 sheet is used for the floor,
the walls are mounted on each side, using 4x8 sheets also, so finished inside dimensions would be 47.25 x +/- 40". Definately the easiest way to go... since 9 or 10' ply might be hard to get, or some joints are required when building larger. I used good two side 3/4: birch with 6 coats of sparvarnish, and it turned out realy good. I believe that TD was weighed in at 680lbs empty, real easi to pul behind any v6, that was my first Mustang with the 3.8 v6, only 165 hp, but 225lbs of torque, manual 5 speed. so she pulled away from changing red lights realy nice ;)
I impressed a few ppl! I do not have this TD anymore, it has been sold.
My current TD in pcs right now, as I am having new tires installed, and finishing the galley cupboards so not quite show ready yet. This one is 5x9 all aluminum, and probably weighs in at closer to 850lbs.

Do you plan to build your own?

Hey Habfan2006,

Thanks for the getting back to me. I really don't think I have the talent to build my own. That is why I'm looking around to see what is out there. The 4x8 sheet makes sense if I were going to make my own. As long as there is enough room for my wife and I plus anything that I might want to pick up when it is a utility.

I'll have to look at some design plans on this forum and keep reading if I am going to attempt to build my own. But the total weight is pretty light and I will be towing it with a Nissan Axxess. The Axxess is rated for 2000lb towing but I'm aiming for sub 1000lb towing.

If you have any design plans kicking around on the TD that would be great. I might have to keep an eye on the own you have if you are decide to sell. What kind of galley idea to you have in mind in that one?

BTW how much did you sell that TD for and was it a Canadian who bought it and how long ago. Maybe they are on the forum and I can ask them more about it.

hi kukiman, sounds like a TD would be the perfect weight to pull behind your vehicle without overdoing it. I don't really have official plans per say since everything is custom, and no two people will build the same, most of it is just made up as you go along with what you have, and what you want it to look like. I am sure there are people offering complete plans for some money.. but then you have to stress about respecting the plan perfectly, or later steps might not add up, I guess there are different ways to get some things done!
As for my current 5x9 all aluminum i'm not quite sure I want to sell it just yet, the galley is empty, and unfinished, although inside cabinets are in and done... I am considering different ideas for the galley.. and getting good ideas of this forum, and the albums...
