my converter isn't working?

Postby Walt M » Tue Jul 21, 2009 6:43 pm

Ok folks I need a bit of advice. although I finished my td last June I just plugged it into 110 ac for the first time. I noticed that the converter wasn't charging the battery. I disconnected the battery "hot" lead and tested the two yellow leads from the transformer board.much to my dismay I got nothing. Are there any other tests I can do to find where it's not working. it's an elixir 45 I have found a replacement board from a site I located from another thread (that'll be my last resort). I'm getting ready to tow it down to the rv dealer I bought it from, let him run it through a couple of tests to see if he'll make good on it. Btw, all the 110 outlets are working fine, and I checked the fuse on the converter thats fine also, and when I hook it up to the TV it charges the battery. Am I correct in thinking it's something wrong with the 110 to 12v dc converter. I look forward to your comments, Walt

A model number might help. A pic might help too! or a link to your model.

My Bad. This is what my converter looks like.

Those two yellow wires come from the converter board but there's no power running from them.

If everything else in the converter is working, it just about has to be the charger circuit. Does the charge circuit have a fuse/breaker? My 'el cheapo' Centurion 20amp converter has a small 110v tube type fuse that protects the charge circuit. Have never had any problem with it but it won't charge the battery when the fuse is removed.

Harvey, thanks for the responce. Yes it does have a tube type fuse,I checked it out and it's ok, I definitely have power going to the board but don't have anything coming out. I just wonder if there is a place to test withn the board itself. Walt

If you have a volt-ohm meter, sometimes called a multimeter, you could check the positive and negative trailer battery connections at the converter. With both AC power and tow vehicle disconnected from the converter it should read the trailer battery voltage. This will at least show good connections from converter to battery. Since you say the converter is charging the tow vehicle battery correctly, I am thinking there may be a problem with the connections or fuse between the converter and trailer battery. I saw a multimeter for $14 today at Lowe's, but really a 12V lamp or other device could confirm a connection between the converter and battery. Just do the test at the converter to check the wiring from converter to battery.
