Suggestions on sealing the back hatch?

Postby retnavycpo » Tue Jul 21, 2009 8:41 pm

The top hinge area, and both sides of my hatch are letting rain drip in.

Have only had the teardrop a few days. After I noticed the leaks, I drove to Lowe's and bought some adhesive-backed rubber weather stripping. Although I'm sure applying that will help, but fairly certain I have not made it waterproof.

Any suggestions for something of a more permanent fix?

Thanks.

If you mean at the ends of the hurricane hinge or whatever you used, did you leave it about 1/4" hangover? I did but mine was still leaking the rain in because I had just too much away on the sides. fixed that with bondo, etc.

Down either side, I used a black closed cell foam weatherstripping... got it at the hardware store... might have been a "marine" application type thing. Not pricey, about 1/2" wide and 1/4" thick, self adhesive.
I used a similar one, much wider where the hatch meets the galley bottom.

Hope that helps.
Some things are way over my head !! ...but it keeps me looking UP!

I haven't figured out what to do about the leak around the hinge area yet. The rubber seal covering it looks quite old and not very pliable. Replacing it looks difficult, but will have to look at it closer.

I guess I need to take pictures and post what I am dealing with.

pics would be great, remember, you can make it water resistant, but its really hard to make water PROOF.
