Great site here.
I've been thinking about teardrops for some time and am happy to have found this site. I'm still in the figuring things out phase but will be getting a TSC 4x8 trailer as soon as a discount coupon shows up. I'll be using it for utility duties until I have the extra cash for the 16 footer that can haul my little tractor about. Seriously thinking about making it into a Weekender design to make it easier for me and the Molly (dog in avatar) to get away on camping/hunting trips.

Welcome!

You will find tons of great information and people here. My brother-in-law actually built my tear with little (very little) help from me, but we both got great tips from this group of wonderful people.

I would also encourage you to join up with Tear Jerkers (link up at the top). We have just started an Alabama group (Sweet Tear Alabama) and toward the end of next week I'll be posting information about our first gathering (probably will be in early December) when I get all the details finalized. All are welcomed to the gatherings even if they come with tents.

All of our gatherings will be Molly friendly as my 2 girls -- Morgan and Erynn will always be in attendance.

my 4x8 tractor supply framed t/d

Postby John T. Hodgen » Sat Jul 25, 2009 8:13 pm

hey CPlater,
I too built a 4x8 on a tractor supply frame. Check out my build/camp pictures here http://s215.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/panheadjohn60/
Hope that this inspires you to start making sawdust! Good luck on your build. I have 4 months build time and $1800-1900 in supply, gear and furnishings.

The trailer looks terrific and I really enjoyed browsing your photo gallery. Looks like you're getting some real use out of your handiwork. It was nice an example of the 4x8 in action too. I looked over one at the local TSC and generally liked what I saw. One thing I did notice is that there were no holes or tabs for mounting the floor and was wonder how you secured yours to the frame?
Although it's first duty will be hauling material for a garage build, once that's done it'll be time to start on the little camper. I've been pouring over nearly everything I can find for ideas and yours has definitely given me some new ones to mull over til that day.

Hey CPlater,
Believe it or not---but my t/d isn't fasten to the frame. The two underneath storage compartments are built tight to the crossbraces of the "No-Floor Frame". I glued recycle shredded tire, the kind at lowes for edging flowerbeds, onto the frame rails--softer ride for the "Costta Lotta"--and should I need the trailer for hauling I can, with 2 Floorjacks and a little time--jack it up out of the frame and lay in ply and fasten by drilling holes in the side rails to secure it. The storage compartments hang low enough to keep it attached to frame. Over 1500 miles on it now and no problems with it even thinking about coming out unless I want it to. Check back to my photobucket because I'm going to add more camping pictures of our recent Rural trip. Hope this answers some questions. I leveled the trailer and built the floor in frame with s/c, then picked up floor and sat s/c on crossbraces to use as a table to do the walls--then sat it back in the frame to finish it up.
Til later by the fire--John T. & Linda 8) ps- I think the frame has angle welded to cross braces to put bolt thru and washer/nut fasten the floor-check the trailer closely for those????

Postby Alfred » Sat Jul 25, 2009 10:01 pm

Hey! Welcome to the group!

I'm building a modified Weekender myself! I'm in Asheville, NC although I have some family in Mobile, AL.

Have fun, great people, a lot of great resources here.

John,
I did notice those brackets and figured that would work for the flat bed but I may weld some tabs on when I add some shock mounts. Still figuring that one out.

Al,
I plan on making a lighter weight version myself with luan skinned sides. Still figuring out the rear hatch and galley arrangement but there is lots of time and many more examples to look at for ideas.
