I'm running a Dexter TorFlex axle (full-width beam) with the max 22.5ยบ Up trailing arm angle, 17" wheels with 45 series tires ... my ground clearance to the bottom of the frame is about 11", just over 10" to the bottom of the "roll pans" ... I've had it down some rutted gravel roads, forded some creeks, and drug it out through the "pasture" at Lawson's Landing campgrounds (and several others ...

...), and I've had NO problems! Trailer is 8' long, with a 3' tongue.
Half-axles are fine, but as mentioned before, can be a challenge to align. Consider the Flexi-Rides with the adjustable trailing arm angle (I'm hoping they've decided to offer 'em with lighter load-ratings than 1500# though, haven't checked in a while).
