Hello from Central Illinois

Postby landman76 » Fri Jul 24, 2009 3:11 pm

On a recent trip to AZ to visit some friends, my buddy turned me onto these awesome little trailers and I've been obsessed ever since. This website is amazing and seems to have alot of knowledge and talent amongst its members.

My girlfriend and I do alot of travelling during the summer months and I am looking to build my own teardrop camper for our adventures. I will be building on a 4x8 farm supply trailer and have been rummaging thru the plethora of information on this site.

I am in awe of you guys & gals and your wonderful creations!

Welcome! Very easy to become addicted. I joined in April, bought my 5x10 Silver Shadow in May and have used at least 6 times this summer and have a seasonal campsite set up in my yard. The kids and I sleep out there when we feel like it and the neighbors all stop over for a campfire and I mix drinks out of the galley. I am thrilled with my purchase. I am more southern IL, in the St. Lousi metro-east. Have fun! I have gotten into the vintage camping equipment and dutch oven cooking through this site as well.

Landman76,
You are right is is addictive. I didnt really want to build a Teardrop but the wife had her heart set on it so I aimed to please. I am really glad I did I love my little Teardrop. And you really get a sense of pride when someone asked where you got it. And you get to say "I built it".
Enjoy your build,
Bill and Marijo

Hey Landman,
Good for you and there's no hope for the addition but to BUILD. You can check out my build/camp picture here http://s215.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/panheadjohn60/ Hope this gives you inspiration to start making sawdust. Build what you want and you can't go wrong. It took 4 months and about 1800.00-2000.00 to build and furnish and camp gear. Good luck and get BUSY!!

I'm with you -- I found this site on June 30, and fell immediately into love with these trailers. By July 6 I had bought one from somebody moving to a larger model! I've been outfitting it for a few weeks, and will have my first real outing next weekend. Love this site!!

Landman76, welcome to the forum, from a transplanted Rockfordian, (is that a word?) from Northern Ill. I am going to make it real easy for you to accomplish your build with little or no problems. The following is a complete set of construction plans and a list of everything needed to completely build a little woody:

This list includes all of the wooden members, shaped plywood, bent exterior trim, templates for the fenders, tongue box, interior cabinet sketches, galley components, door and hatch-hinge hardware, wooden plug count, quantity of varnish needed and related items: Just scroll down.

Naw, just kidding, you don't need no stinking plans, just design and build to your heart's content as many others have done. We have a wealth of info, as you are aware, right here on this board, so bolt some stringers down on the trailer, glue and screw a 4x8 sheet of plywood down and start dreaming.

First off, cut out a cardboard full-size template of your intended shape and tack it to the edge of the floor. (it's a lot easier making changes in cardboard, than it is in already-cut plywood). Lay down on the floor with your Sweetie and draw out where you want the cabinets and galley wall to be. Can't wait to see the progress pics, and hope you post em as you go along. I have only 2 suggestions: make sure it has 2 doors and make them as big as possible, you'll be glad you did. Good luck on your build, and try to attend some of the midwestern gatherings back there. TDers are a friendly bunch and you can get loads of ideas and free advice.
