Snippy "big RV" owners

Postby gailkaitschuck » Tue Oct 04, 2005 3:07 pm

I know the teardrops seem to get lots of attention everywhere they go (when we showed off our "new baby" to my partners parents this weekend, his mother commented that is was "just as cute as a button!").

Any negative comments from "big trailer" owners? I was showing the Hall of Fame pictures off to a co-worker who owns a big fifth wheel and after about the third picture, she sniffed, looked down her nose and commented that we MUST be nuts to camp in such little, cheap looking things.

I was sorta surprised at her snottiness. I did ask her what her gas mileage was towing her trailer.

Gail-

I agree; most everyone thinks they are cute!

I'm not sure if people understand that it isn't necessarily because teardroppers can't AFFORD some big behemoth; it's that we choose not to!

This person is also the kind of person that probably hides in their trailer; not out and about making new friends and having a good time!

Mean people suck!

Cheers,

Coop

Yeah, when I first saw teardrops last year on the travel channel I thought there is no way I could camp in one of those things. No toilet, no shower, you can't stand in them. Then I thought how we usually camp in a tent. Let me tell you the tear is so much better. I just wish I would have heard of these things 10 years ago. Most people don't get it until they see one in person.

Gail,, you will find a lot of folks that just do not understand,, its not about how big and flashy the rig is its the fun you are gonna have with the people who like you have chosen small,, a number of big rig owners have gone teardroping and sold their large units because they didnt use them anymore,, and if they dont have a sence of humor they probably wouldnt like alot us anyway,, smile and enjoy,,,

remember,, size Does matter,, the smaller the better!!!!!!!!!!1

Gail I experienced that same sort of one upmanship in lots of different thing in life. Its obvious to her that there is no way SHE could possibly live in one so you must be a inferior type of person. Anyone who put another down because of choices of camper, boat, house, car or anything else is just showing how shallow they are. And shallow people should be ignored at least and avoided whenever possible.

By the way I if you can turn her around it would be a miracle!

Gail,

I experienced similar reactions when bicycle touring. Most people admired what I was doing and asked lots of questions about my trip. However, I ran into a few, not many, who reacted as your colleague did. Her comment about TD's being "cheap" really shows her ignorance.

Last weekend we were camping with friends. Their 35' Airstream motorhome and jeep behind couldn't get as close to the lake as we could. :R I just backed right down and was ready to relax. Then again, when they were driving they had their GPS, DVD, and rear camera set up for the driver while the passenger was in the back on the bed watching the other DVD. Yep, that's what I call getting away from it all. We had a good time teasing each other all weekend about the pros and cons of each other's rigs. I've shown pictures of my TD to co-workers. Some call it cute, others call it no-way-in-he!! If we were all the same life would be boring. 8)

I'm getting ready to head down to SoHum to replace the windows in a friend's rental.
I had a hard time getting in touch with him... Turns out, he and his wife were on a return trip, having just purchased a monster motorhome.
I gave him heck, then preached my teardrop sermon to him.
I know when I get down there, he's going to try and impress me with it too... :?
He agreed to stop by Pamplin next July to see what all the fuss is about. :eyebrows:

One big plus is that you can store a teardrop at home. With so many home owners associations, deed restrictions, and covenants it is getting harder to store these things at home. A teardrop is short enough to hide behind the fence. No one will see it, and you don't have to pay a storage lot ot keep it.

Well, except for Ira :R they already saw his.

people tend to hang out with their peers... i don't remember ever being invited to watch a projector tv being shown on the side of a huge rv and sharing pop corn with them.... they are friendly enough if i make the first move, but it is kind of obvious they do not consider me 'one of them'.

that is why tear gatherings are nice, lots of similarly infected tear drop owners and we don't have to cow-tow to no stink'in gigantic RV guys....

kind of like showing up at the country club in a VW beetle... 'duh, could you please park that out in back?'......

actually, while in Natchez, Miss, i got the only remaining camp site out of 400 because it was on the end of an island, and I was the largest camper that could fit in the tiny space... they were having a 'ballons over natchez' festival and were full up weeks in advance, except for that one space.

Now, Now... we have to be nice to these big RV'ers. After all you would be a little cranky too if you had to pay all that money for gas. And just paid 100+ thousand dollars on a new RV that is upstaged by an 8' Tear. Its gotta be a little frustrating for them. Nobody coming up and asking questions like...who's plans did you use, where'd you get your windows, how many coats and so on. Its gotta hurt! So be nice. The next time your out in your Tear enjoying the outdoors, talking to curious persons, having a campfire. Try to get an RV'ers attention, through there window and wave. (but not during Jeopardy) LOL

Happy Trails

There are snobs and insecure people everywhere and some of them own large RVs. I suspect that part of the problem is that teardrops look as if they are having more fun on a lot less money and the other part of the problems is that some people can imagine why anyone would want a trailer that you can't stand up in and where you go outside to pee....

My mother in law camps in a huge bus. She can't understand our Teardrop and it doesn't appeal to her. I can't understand her motorhome and it doesn't appeal to me.

Takes all kinds to fill the campgrounds.

I just wish some of the rest of them wouldn't run their generators so much....

since mine is white, think i'll put a poster of the grand canyon on the side and shine a drop light on it at night and sit there and drink beer and watch it... maybe when they drive by they will think it is a projection tv...... enough beer and i'll think it is a projection tv, what with it moving around and so on..

Gail,

I decided my 5th wheel was too big to camp in and too expensive to store. So now I am living in my 5th wheel and building a teardrop to camp in.....

All us 5th wheel owners are not snobs.... :D

You'll just have to excuse those who do not know better.
