Which trailer?

Postby yuskis1 » Thu Jul 16, 2009 9:37 pm

I plan on making a modified benroy and am looking for a lower cost trailer to use. I have notices that most people recommend the redtrailers.com but i found another and was wondering if anyone really knows the difference between them and if there is an advantage to one over the other. below are links to the 2 websites that have the trailers.

the one from harbor freights is quite a bit less... even after shipping.

Both are used regularly in builds and seem to do just fine, if you look close at the Hall of Fame pics you can see them under many very nice rigs. The HF one is quite popular, it's a pretty good bang for the buck. It's a bolt together model, I'm not sure about the NT trailer.

The bolt together trailers are easy to modify for the Benroy, and they seem to do the job well. I didn't think much of them until someone gave me one and I built the Gypsy trailer on it.

Do yourself a big favor and find nobody's album and see how he reinforced the tongue. I built on one and I feel there is too much flex in the tongue and it is about 18" too short for good highway manners. It need some help and before the body is on is the time.

Harbor freight trailers I have heard from several folks come with problems with wheels. One had to order replacement parts when bolting it together.
mine was made on a boat trailer you might look around you might find one cheep.

My latest frame donor was $250.00 .

They are out there just drive the alleys and if you see one in the yard that looks like it hasn't moved in years knock and ask if its for sale. Hell I have been given 3 in the last 2 years ( I got greedy and sold them).
Have my eye on a real sweet all aluminum wave runner trailer $450.00
I can pick the rear of the frame off the ground with 1 hand . It is gonna make one SWEET light 4x9 Teardrop

The problem with the wheel bearings is a bum rap. The new owner needs to clean the bearings completely and repack them with a good grade of high temp lithium grease. The crap the bearings are packed with from the box is the problem it is a anticorrosion gell and not much of a lubricant. As to missing parts I have bolted together 2 and not a nut or bolt missing. You can get real fouled up if you mix up your left parts for your right side parts. I had my 40 x 48 almost together and things were not lineing up. I got to looking and had the sides reversed.

Is this the RedTrailer you speak of?

And for the group:
Is the RedTrailer desired due to the Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (MCO)? Or do all the trailers above that issue covered?

Also I've been looking to weld one of these bolt together trailers instead of bolting them. Should I be looking at different trailers if that is the case?

Thanks in advance.

Jason
