Or,if they are nasty, as you get ready for bed at night, you might accidently "shoot a moon" out the door. :dancing :dancing :drofl: :drofl:

Now, now everyone. Let's be nice. My folks have a big RV, and it suits them. I have a teardrop, and it's perfect for me. I could afford a bigger trailer, but did not want the hassle. I can pull a big trailer, but don't like to. I wanted a teardrop so I wouldn't have to set up a tent, or worry about the weather so much. (Two of my kids sleep in the back of my Excursion.) My hubby doesn't like to travel or camp, so 3 of the kids go with me. We follow my parents on their travels a lot. And while my dad is hooking up all his stuff, my 12 year old son and I have finished backing in, leveling, and plugging in. Done. Time to help dear old dad, or just grab a coke out of the ice chest. And there is nothing better to me than a can of coca-cola straight out of the ice chest! :D

Thanks for all of the feedback.

I suppose it's all in what floats your boat and maybe how you view camping. I can remember in my river rafting days trying to explain to someone the awesome beauty of running the Colorado river through the Grand Canyon only to have them ask "but...where do you go to the bathroom? How do you take a bath?" Huh? Both are done in the river (and often at the same time). Such concerns rank about one millionth on the list of the incredible experience of river rafting.

One thing that I've read over and over again on this list is the pride and sense of accomplishment that comes through with the folks who have built their own teardrops.

I have an older 35' 5th wheel trailer, and am building a tear. I won't get rid of the 5er, it has it's place, but so does the tear. Depending on where we go and how long we will be there, we camp in everything from the 5er to a 2 man backpacking tent or the back of the truck.

As far as people in big rigs looking down at people camping in a tear, we get the same thing from some people when we camp in our 5th wheel. It's a 20 year old Holiday Rambler, and we pull with a 10 year old pick-up. Although they are both in great shape, the trailer doesn't have slide outs and all of the newest and best stuff.

Who cares? We like it, it serves our needs, and didn't cost us an arm and a leg. We're not out to impress anyone, just want to enjoy ourselves and get out in the woods. I think some people are just more concerned with impressing otheres than they are concerned with getting out in the woods and enjoying nature.

I posted this info on another thread, but is more applicable here. I stopped in a local RV dealership to look at parts and equipment. Three or four salesmen in their matching preppy mint green golf shirts were standing areound BSing. I guess, in my old shorts and sandals, needing a shave, they immediately pegged me as a non-buyer of their fancy rigs, so no one even gave me a glance.

Finally, I approached two of them, and stood waiing patiently while they finished their discussion of whether to buy or lease an auto. Finally, I got one's attention. I explained that I wanted to ask a couple of questions as I was planning to build a small camping trailer. One immediately said "Why do you want to build one? You can buy a trailer cheaper". I emphatically replied "CRAP...I can build mine for around $2K and can't touch a small popup for under $5K". He then said, "Well, you'll never sell it because it won't have a brand name on it". I explained that I didn't want to sell it, and if I did, I sure could get my money back and more. I then asked about the type of connection I'd need to install for shore power, and one replied "Just go across the street to the RV park and ask them".

Due to their attitudes, I never got my questions answered. I just looked for myself and left. They just don't get it, or they just don't want to bother with anyone who isn't a potential buyer who will give them a nice commission.

Sometimes I pretend to be normal. But, that gets boring...so I go back to being me.

Cracker 39,
This reminds me of when my grandfather bought his last new car. He had talked to a salesman and pretty much decided. He came back the next day with my grandmother to seal the deal. Being a retired railroader he always wore a beatup old engineers cap with his overalls. He looked like he didn't have two nickels to rub together. He goes in and his salesmen is out and the other guys wouldn't give him the time of day. So he went to another dealership and bought the exact same car, paying cash for it. You can imagine how the salesman felt was when he called my grand-dad that evening. Moral of the story, never judge a book by it's cover.

Revenge on car salesmen - I have an Iraqi-born friend who would act as our company's 'Mr Fixit' in many countries, because his Arab genes seemed to come out as soon as there was some bargaining to be done.

When his wife wanted a new car, he did an intial sales negotiation himself, but his father insisted on visiting to do the final deal himself. The friend's wife said this took about half an hour and that the salesman emerged from the meeting room with tears in his eyes.

When she went to pick up the car, the salesman insisted that they were selling the car to her at approximately 15% below the cost of the car to them and that he would not do business with her father-in-law in future!

Andrew,

They tell me that every time I buy a car. That's why I currently own a Dodge, before that it was a Chevy, and before that, a GMC.

So far I haven't had any bad vibes from RV owners. The frst thing I tell people is that it is a CAMPER not an RV and I like the low cost and satisfaction of having built it myself. As far as sales people and I have been one; I never judge a person by how he appears. True Story : Mid sixties in Canada I was with a friend wearing faded, worn jeans T shirt and beard stubble. Walked into Rolls dealer and salesman in 3 piece suit is trying to get us out of there. He demands to see the manager and procedes to pay cash for brand new Rolls only on condition that the aforementioned salesman be fired. We rode out in a shiny white car.
