Hello from Arizona

Postby postalbear51 » Mon Jul 27, 2009 3:48 pm

I have been viewing this site for awhile now and have a question. Has anyone actually built a TD that you can remove from the trailer platform? I will be buying a trailer soon and will have to use it as an utility trailer most of the time but would like to be able to put a TD on it to go out on weekends. I've looked at the tent options and may have to go that way.

Hi PB51, welcome to the forum. Sure, there are some here on the board that have built slide-ins, so they can use their trailers for dual purposes. In order to do so, it would be wise to install removable sides that can be used when converted to a cargo trailer. Then when they are removed, a teardrop "body" can be secured to the trailer frame and, bingo, you're ready to go. Be aware that the teardrop doors would be inoperative if the cargo sides were left in place, but I don't think I had to tell you that. I guess someone will follow this post with suggestions or pics of what has already been built. I have thought of doing the same thing on any future build.

I've seen a couple guys build teardrops that can be removed from the chassis. I'm not sure I ever actually ever saw them remove the teardrop.

However, http://www.microlitetrailer.com builds something called the Wazat, and they actually remove the teardrop!!!

Roly and Mike thanks for the welcome. I guess you could lift it off but you would have to watch the weight of the Td and not get too heavy.

Weight should be but of little concern, I even know of a fellow that has built a teardrop that, without the trailer frame, only weighs 95 pounds. ME! Good luck on your proposed build, looking forward to pics.

Mike looks like a good idea. I was also thinking of doing something in a weekender design

hey p/b51,
I can remove my t/d as its held in the frame by the storage compartments. With 2 floorjacks and alittle time I can remove it and use the trailer for hauling. My build/camp pixs are here; http://s215.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/panheadjohn60/ any questions just ask and enjoy your build. I have about 4 months build time and 1800-1900 in my build.
