Stripped Check valve

I'm getting a 220f lantern back in shape.
Of course it looks like I didnt use a bige enough screwdriver to remove the check valve at the bottom of the font. I stripped the flat tip a lttle but not to bad. I could probably get another driver to get a better bite.

My question is this,,, Do I need to remove it? Nothing in the lantern has been gunked up to bad. I would rather leave it than risk any more stripping.

If it was operating and sealing, there is no need to remove it. Some of those are very difficult to remove. I have 2 different tools that I've made to do the job. 1 is a 1/2" old spade bit that I ground to fit so that it didn't tear out the inner threads. I can use a 1/4" socket on the other end. I've not had any luck with just a screwdriver, but I did break the tip on one trying to remove the valve and stripped the slot. The other tool is a #4 EZ out welded to a 3/8" bolt. If I remove it with that and it always gets them out, it's junk. Doug
