Anyone use evaporative coolers in their homes?

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

The swamp cooler is a great device for dry climates as stated.I used one for years in Tx.The humidity does kill their effectiveness though.I always opened the windows in the area of the house i was in to draw the cool air through that area.

Scott,

We run one most of the summer. We just had a humid spell (not quite the monsoon season we used to get in Tucson) so we had it off for about 3 weeks. It's back on now and feels really nice. June's electric bill was $110 so there's a significant savings. I also like the moist air.

My understanding is that as the temp approaches 100 they start to lose their effectiveness. We live at 4200 feet in the high desert and do not have one, or A/C either. We have ceiling fans in every room, open the house at night to our cool temps and close it up, at least for a while, during the day. We only have about 3 weeks normally that is hot. The neighbor has one and it works well for him. We have been thinking about one.

So, I have installed a window unit in my spare bedroom where my computer, TV and double bed is located. Let the rest of the house be hot, I'll hunker down in my little Man Cave and save a bunch on the electric bill. However, an evap cooler is a probability in the near future, if the cost of elect is still too high.

Roly, I am just up Grand Avenue from you in Lake Elsinore (Lakeland Village), and all that we use on our 4 bedroom house is an evap cooler. Not saying it is always cool inside, but we do have a swimming pool that we cool off in from time to time also. That really helps beat the heat. The cost in energy savings is phenomenal!
It worked until I fixed it!!!
