Your best bet may be to go with an existing design -- have you looked in the design library? If you find one you like, someone else has probably already built it and there is probably a thread on it that you can read and learn more. Then you can ask some specific and meaningful questions.
The gage you are talking about would probably work, but to do a trailer from scratch you are going to have to do a lot of figuring and planning. For instance, the gage may work for the periphery, but your tongue might need to be beefier. All of those methods and formulas are in the design library -- check it out -- lots of good stuff in there. Once you have a specific design or concept, then you can start figuring out the material that you will need.
