Now to turn this into something political - I just want to say that I appreciate paying for everyones new car rebate with my taxes - it makes me feel so much better when my car payment comes due and I have to pay it with my own funds :x When Do I get a chance to make money on the stimulus or do we just get to pay for it

I thought I heard somewhere that the "rebate" is considered taxable income.

I feel ripped off here. I bought a tiny car, but because Mr Obama is not my leader, I had to make due with a $3500 rebate from GM.

This whole cash for clunkers thing really torques me!

Why do I have to help someone else buy a car? Since when is a car an essential of life?

Old cars eventually disappear on their own.

Why are we paying people to replace their cars with foreign imports? Shouldn't we be encouraging people to buy American? Seeing as we all now partly own GM?

It all makes me crabby!!! :x

The list might just suggest the Explorer has been held onto longer than most other vehicles. Most I have seen were in excess of 250,000 Kilometers (sorry no mileage conversion) many over 300K.

At the risk of a good hot flaming I will rant a bit...

<rant>Isn't it funny how great capitalism works when big corporations fail and we bail them out with socialist support. What's the point of governments if they allow themselves to be run buy the corporate world?

GM & Chrysler both deserved to fail like ANY business that doesn't provide a product with the quality the market demands, and I don't care that they are now 'supposedly' producing better quality in the last 3-5 years. If you or I ran out of money for our business' we would not get a bailout. I wonder how much money was spent on lawyer & consultant fees to make the 'big pitch'?

I may be in Canada, but we are getting shafted by a Canadian version of the 'bailouts' too. As for the auto-workers (and spin-off companies), I feel for them and how hard it would be to start over - but their homes should be paid off and they should be pretty much debt free... oh wait I forgot we need to live beyond our means.

I have had to start over twice in my life already due to poor corporate decisions and stronger competition - and in the first case I was well on my way up the ladder. C'est la vie.

Well, I'm finally getting something from the government after all these years of paying taxes. I bought a house this year and am getting a 8k tax credit...

On the other side of the coin, I live in CT, where I am paying 4k per year house taxes on a 900 sq ft house..... If I was south of the mason-dixon line, the taxes would be under 1k..... so I guess I paid my money and made my choices.....

What galls me is that the 'clunker' must be in running order to be traded in, and then it it rendered inoperable and crushed!!! :x
Also, my 02 Taurus does not qualify because when it was new, it was rated 18-24 mpg, even though now it only gets around 14-16 mpg!
I would love to have an older Explorer that's in good shape.

According to the C.A.R.S. site

Is the credit subject to being taxed as income to the consumers that participate in the program?

The CARS Act expressly provides that the credit is not income for the consumer.

However State and Local taxes maybe - check with your local juridication

$4K for 900 sq./ft. house does seem excessive. The taxes on our shotgun shack, on a regular city lot has been running ~$7500/yr. But apples to apples, yes, you are paying more than we are. And we don't have a state income tax!

CD, isn't the normal "trade in cycle" about 3 years. If so, I'd say the Explorer fared very well for the owners (providing they kept them all this time.)

BTW, it doesn't say how old the Jeeps are.
