'69 Fleetwing Travel Trailer

Postby Scott76 » Mon Aug 03, 2009 12:40 pm

Hello everbody. I been lurking around for a long time. I thought I joined earlier but I guess I didn't. Anyhow, My name is Scott & my wife & I live in Mechanicsburg, PA. I'm always builing something with my hands. I build a '67 VW Bug about 1.5 years ago and I drive it as my daily driver. My wife & I are into old car and antiques. We been wanting a Scotty for years but could never find any in our price range or in the condition that would be useable. My old co-worker told me about a camper he had out back so I went and looked at it. It turn out to be a Fleetwing. After digging for sometime I figured this out! Anyhow I got it and started to tear it down to rebuild it. I guess thats an understatment!!! I already have the build thread over on Volksrods.com. If it won't be to much I would move a copy over here but I trully don't see a need for that.

So if you would like to see what I have been up too, heres the link to our '69 Fleetwing Camper Build:

I do have several questions and I'm always open to advice. Thanks I hope you enjoy the show!!

Thanks,
Scott

Scott,
What a great find. Its gonna be a beauty when shes done Im sure. Good to see another Pennsylvanian on this site. I built my "Sponge" (thats her name) from the ground up. The wife and I cant wait for more pics of your reconstruction. By the way have ya got a name for her yet? Have you joined the TearJerkers yet? If you havent you should. Its a great camping club where you can see these little beauties up close and personal. They have many gatherings throught the summer. Next one for our area (Pa) is next weekend at Cook Forest State Park. Come for the day or the weekend. See some in person and meet some nice people.
Great day to you,
Bill and Marijo :vroom:
PS Just looked at all your photos. Nice. Very nice. Cant wait for the paint. What color you doing her?
Hope to see you on the road.

Thanks! Its a labor of love. I could see what I wanted in that mess at the begining. I can't wait now till its painted. I have 2 weeks to get the buffing of the aluminum trim under control. I have been slacking on that job because my car hobbie got in the way....LOL.... I ordered the paint lastnight. I'm getting the orig. paint matched as close as I can get it. My buddy has a bodyshop and he's taking care of it for me.

The reason the camper build is on Volksrods is because I built my daily driver there too.

welcome Scott,
What great work on the rebuild of camper and VW. I love the red tint windowsin the Dub. The cooler was a great find and fits in with both hobbies.  I like that you wrapped the camper with Tyvek-it will help keep it preserved from moisture.
As for the Tearjerker's--great bunch of people--I've been to 3 gatherings this yr and ALWAYS had a GREAT time!! :D Hope to see more and meet you by the fire.
Til later by the fire--John T. & Linda 8) ps--here are my build/camp photos--enjoy http://s215.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/panheadjohn60/

I had the area best paint supplier match the orig. paint. They hit it dead on with the blue. Its also matches the Scotty blue too. I love it. Now I just need to get the all the alum. trim polished so I can bring it home and finish it.
