hurricane hinge question

Postby willik » Sat Aug 08, 2009 9:42 pm

I went over today to help my brother-in-law put some finishing trim on the teardrop he built/is building for me.

In the building of the galley, we used the hurricane hinge. It has been on the galley hatch since April. As you are looking at the galley, the right end of the top portion of the hinge on the hatch is prying up. I had seriously siliconed that puppy and it is pulling up the silicone. The screws in the bottom piece of the hinge on that side are secure and the left side shows no signs of similar issue. My brother-in-law said he noticed that this happened in the last 2 weeks.

I forgot my camera, so I don't have pictures, but has anyone else ever seen something like this?

Hi , did you put any screws thru the top portion of the hinge? There are holes for screwing it down, just make sure you hit a solid piece of wood.. Did you install a double spar under the hinge or a 2x4 ?? There should be a big enough spar there to hold the screws for the hinge. Yes you need silicone under the hinge also to seal it. A few pics would help. Good luck!
