Most Cashed-In Clunkers...

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Why not go and buy someone's junker for $500, and then go and trade that in on a Prius. That's still a $4000 discount, plus you get to keep your Camry!

You must have owned your clunker for at least a year, and be able to prove it. You must be able to show it was insured for the previous year, although it looks like there may be a little wiggle room since some states don't require all drivers to carry insurance.

I've not been following the program, so I don't really know the details. I guess I'm not surprised.

But I have a question... these clunkers that are traded in, do they have to be taken out of circulation, and crushed and recycled? Even if they have lots of years left in them?

What if someone trades in a 2008 Explorer... :?

It appears that Freedom of Speech has become a constitutional protection for shouting mobs against the tyranny of thoughtful, civilized discourse. -- CD

Rather snide and sneaky little jab. If you're a liberal it's thoughtful discourse. If you are a conservative you're only a member ot the shouting mobs. A conservative's opinion doesn't matter so in the words of the President....Shut up.

yeah, they are permanently disabled. Before it leaves the dealers property the oil is drained and the engine then ran with a silicate based fluid until is siezes. Then the car is either sent to a dismantler or straight to the crusher. Either way it must be crushed within 6 months. No matter what the condition of the car is, good or bad.

I'll reply by PM, as is proper with such "discourse" -- instead of hijacking one of YOUR threads.

On the news report from Last night - all but the engine can be salvaged. They drain the oil from the engine and replace it with a liquid/ glass compound that seizes the engine and renders it unrepairable. They did it to a Mercedes with a perfect engine and I just winced as the engine seized and made that clunk sound. Dealer said it's the law concering the clunkers!

These clunkers that are crushed...Whose landfill do they end up in? If money is made off scrap metal, who gets that money? When a clunker is stripped, who gets the profits? You can bet it's not going back to Washington.

I workrd for the USPS til I retired last November. People always complained about their taxes paying my wages. Not since 1970. The USPS is, I'm sure, the only government branch that was self-supporting and even put money into the treasury. Other branches should do the same.

As I understand it the program is aimed at cars that get fewer than 18 mpg to start with, and so, if the idea is to raise the national gas mileage average, disabling engines that are not meeting that standard makes sense to me. It's not meant to make us all happy.

The program appears to have been designed to do several things: jump-start car sales, take as many as possible of the "low-mpg" vehicles off the road as people could afford to trade, and circulate credit/money in the car industry.

It wasn't meant as a boost to the lowest-income group. It was meant to encourage people who could afford to trade cars in the next six to 24 months to go ahead and do that now, and to trade for something with better gas mileage.

If it had been meant to be a boost to low-income folks instead of to car dealers, you could've used the rebate to buy a cheaper car -- i.e. a pre-owned car, as the dealers like to call them. But that wouldn't have had as positive an effect on credit flow and boosting banks' bottom line.

You must have owned your clunker for at least a year, and be able to prove it. You must be able to show it was insured for the previous year, although it looks like there may be a little wiggle room since some states don't require all drivers to carry insurance.

Doesnt matter what year it is if it gets less than 18 mi per gallon it you can get the government rebate for a new fuel effient car. You must have these clunkers licensed and insured in your name for one year. And these clunker trade-Ins are shredded or Crunched no matter how good of condition. Engine is given a gallon of Bust to distroy the engine at the Dealership, so the junkyards who are tempted to fix up these clunkers cant. Getting the gas guzzlers of the road also saves air quality.
