HF trailer wheel question

Postby RogHodge » Mon Aug 10, 2009 10:33 pm

Okay- I searched sdtripper2’s insane index and didn’t see my answer so…
I bought a 4x8 HF trailer with 8” wheels (only $50  )- I suspect that it is the 950 lb capacity trailer. So,
1- can I put the 12” tire wheel combo on it? And
2- Would that then make it a 1195lb capacity trailer? :worship:
Thank you in advance
For those who would like to have a look I have a build journal and covet your feedback.

1] Yes. 4 bolt wheels will work but watch the fender clearance.

2] Maybe. The 145# load difference may come from the tires on the 12 inch rims but the springs may be different for the two frames. The heavy duty (1195# GVW) boast 3 leaf springs.

Great buy on the trailer.

I did just that and this was the result !

I don't know if the clearance is different on the 8" and the 12" by using a different fender bracket or if it is just my dumb luck but the bolt you see in the fender picture cut the tire 1/2 in two .

Fresh information in the quest for knowledge. After 30+ min. on the phone with the HF people we have determined that the Hub and Bearing for the two trailers- item #42709- 990lb trailer and 90154 the 1175lb trailer- the parts are the same- identical part# for the bearings and hubs (for those inclined toward humor let me be more specific- the bearing and hub each have their very own part number but the two trailers share the same replacement parts- okay now I’m just confused- you know what I mean- leave me alone.)
Therefore I (or you dear reader) can clearly use the 12” wheel on the 8” trailer – But as we have been warned- adjust the fender accordingly. So… what about the leaf springs? Glad you asked
They don’t know- yet. I strongly suspect that the springs are interchangeable- if not identical. This might lead to question #3- If the springs are different, is it worth the cost ~$10 each to swap them out and gain around 200lbs capacity?
Your humble servant- Roger
Those in the know might choose to include this information in the appropriate trailer info place- unless I just missed it and I am duplicating work

Odds favor them being the same especially if the number of spring leafs are the same. The difference may be the load range rating of the tires but if you think it's worth getting new springs it then it is. It's your build.

I tend to agree it is simply the tire capacity.

In fact the 40 x 48 uses the same hubs and tire combinations. I have taken the hub assembly from the 40 x 48 and installed it on the 4x8 axle set.
