Like archaeology? Like camping? Check out Passport in Time

I wasn't sure where to post this, so I'll start in Off-Topic. If you're not familiar with Passport in Time, it is a volunteer archaeology and historic preservation program of the USDA Forest Service (FS). Through it you have the opportunity to participate in an excavation and see some history (and archaeology) first hand. Best of all, there's no charge for the program, although you will need to cover your own expenses with regards to food and such. The projects generally try to bring in a variety of participants with varying levels of experience - so don't let lack of experience stop you from applying.

Now, how does this tie in with teardrops? The programs are generally on lands administered by the USDA Forestry Service, often parks. This means camping is close at hand. Some of the opportunities provide free camping - for example, the Chippokes Plantation project is coming up (October 26-November 1, 2009 (including weekends)) and a limited number of RV sites w/ hookups are available at no charge to participants. I'm tempted to apply for that project, but I don't think the timing will work. Check out the websites for opportunities near you.

I don't have anything to do with the program, just thought it's something people here might be interested in.
