Why it's important to pay attention while driving

Postby dakotamouse » Thu Aug 20, 2009 6:09 pm

Gotta warn you this is very graphic but it shows how just one little mistake can screw things up for so many people. It shows how important it is take your driving seriously and give it all of your attention.

The kids in the video look like good kids there was just one mistake.....

Holy cow  that's a major Hollywood production there. Very effective - at least let's hope so.

Should be required watching by anyone who owns a cell phone and has a driver's license.

Unfortunately, the very ones who need to watch are too busy texting.

I saw this just today in real life...no wreck BUT 3 high school aged girls, driving down the road...all 3 texting, singing, dancing and paying very little attention to the road...I was following them and as we came up on the busiest intersection in the area, the light was red and they ran right thru it...never even slowed a bit, luckily for them, one car braked hard to keep from hitting them and they skated on but it could have been VERY bad...the worst thing is, they probably never even noticed how close they came to dying and taking someone else with them.......

And, sadly, this sort of film still has to be made here (it's from the Welsh Police), where using a handheld phone or texting while driving is a specific motoring offence. Get caught three times and you lose your driving licence.

The latest research here says that using a phone while driving is as dangerous as driving drunk but many, many people believe it's alright for them to use a phone while driving "because they are careful" - which is exactly the reason their parents said why it was OK for them to drive after drinking.

I think the real problem is that the attention devoted to the phone call is what prevents drivers from recognising how badly they are driving - exactly as being drunk removes self-criticism.

Phone = Alcohol

Lately, I am aware that the car coming toward me on a 2 lane road, may be texting and drift into my lane. Therefore, I have both hands on the wheel, ready to swerve away from the on coming screwball, and aware that I may have to dive into the nearby shoulder or down a steep embankment, all in the effort to avoid a head on collision.

All cell phones, and related similar devices should be prohibited, and offenders should spend the night in jail. Hey, it's against the law here in Kal-ee-forn-ea, but it still happens, often. Buckle up and hope for the best.

Just spent some time TDing accross the UP in Michigan.

Really impresed by the amount of rumble strips not just on the sides of the road, but also down the center lane. Nice and loud if you stray either way.

Good idea for keeping people alert. Also keeps people from making a curved road shorter by cutting corners. Another questionable practice.

Unfortunately as a reserve police officer, I've seen this too many times in person. Mostly from drunk drivers but sometimes phone related. It's the innocent people that usually get killed while the person at fault lives. It's sad.

Maybe you didn't like the camera work in that production or thought the acting didn't seem authentic. Perhaps an actual 2 camera documentary would be more to your liking? (This is not gory - just rare play by play proof of this problem and extremely pathetic).

I had a fair idea what this video would be like and didn't want to watch it! In my line of work over the years I've been in too many ER's with accident victims and their families...and have had to tell too many people that "Dick or Jane" didn't make it through! Yeah the aftermath is pretty horrific both physically and emotionally.

As an aside, I was surprised to see it was from GWENT... a county in Wales I know well. Indeed when I saw the sign "Welcome to Tredegar" I realized I've driven that road. You may have seen the vest on the policeman with the word HEDDLU along with the word Police...that's the Welsh word for the boys in blue!

I've noticed more people texting at stop lights. The light changes and everyone drives away except for the car in front of me. I honk, they give me the finger and we drive off...

Yeah, I pull over to talk on the phone when/if necessary.

New law in Texas went into effect yesterday. No talking or texting on a cell phone while in a school zone. Penalty is $200.
