How can I tell if my neighbor's utility trailer is stolen?

Postby mrsmom » Wed Aug 26, 2009 5:24 pm

We have a neighbor that no one on the street cares for (long list of reasons) and has recently acquired a nice large utility trailer. It has no plate and am sure it needs to be registered. I think it might be stolen. How can I go about checking? Are there VIN on utility trailers and if so where? Is it any place that could be checked with out getting caught? I know this all sounds like cloak-and-dagger stuff but I really want to know if it's stolen. I tried doing a search online to see if anyone has reported a stolen trailer that looks like this one. So far no luck. Can I contact local law enforcment or will they think this is a waste of time? He has had many run-ins with the law. Any advice would be much appreciated. By the way, I'm in California if that makes a difference.

Are you kidding me? Really. With a suspicious post count of "1", I don't know if an ounce of energy should be expended in responding to this anyway. Nonetheless, this is one post that I am hoping really is spam and just a random collection of words that happen to come together and form this. I don't know who's the victim here.

Sorry Scott if you're suspicious. I'd be too. Doing all the googling i've been doing this was the whole reason for joining this site. I don't know anything about trailers and do not own one. I don't know where else I can ask this info.

I noticed a tiny red and white sticker on the front of his trailer (just what I can see from inside my house). Possibly this might hold some information like manufacturer or VIN, something that I could use. Will be very careful and will post what it is when I get the chance.

I'd advise you to MYOB and if it's stolen, i'm sure some patrolman will notice eventually.

Seriously....why do you care if it is stolen? Are you planning on buying it?

I would leave it alone, and mind my own business if it is not affecting me.

Utility trailers in California are required to have a license plate.

IF it has no plate he cannot park it on the street legally in Ca. Which a cop wil eventualy see. If he has it backed into his driveway how do you know it has no plate? Trespassing are we?
Or maybe he just bought it and has not recieved the plate from the DMV. Or maybe he borrowed it to move out of your neighbrhood and into one where the neighbors are not so nosey & suspicious.

Just a Thought

I understand the MYOB stand. I've tried that for the last 2 years. However, it's hard when I come home and am crossing my lawn to my door and he stands on his lawn yelling mother f...er at me. This is a pleasant older neighborhood and he moved here about 2 years ago. He's renting and any illegal activity is grounds for an eviction. Officers have been out a couple of times for domestic violence. Several neighbors would love to see him move. One actually has a restraining order because of him saying horrible things to her like (I'm going to get you b...) This woman is nearly 70! He's had the trailer for about 2 months. He usually parks it on the street but recently backed it into his driveway. As far as I know it still doesn't have plates. I don't know what else to do. We've made complaints to the officers and they said to document everything and we could try abatement if there are several of us documenting all of the incidents. Most of the time you just hear him yelling horrible things to his wife and son and they yell right back. I'm just hoping to find something that will help bring peace back to our neighborhood.

Hear this and learn the lesson well – shouting and screaming at people is NO grounds for an eviction and prying into someone’s life to Get them evicted is low in my opinion. Heck I’d scream at you too if I found you nosing about my business. I have neighbors who will call code enforcement when they think the grass is to high in their neighbor’s yard. Once I some tenants who were renting a house for us and needed to be evicted for lack of payment after four months. I stuck by what the judge said and went by the books. My dad on the other hand decided to take maters into his own hands and went and confronted the guy – guess who went to jail for trespassing – my dad – and this was on property that I owned!
The person you are Trying to get evicted has rights just as you – and He may exercise them and you might find the police in your yard writing a trespassing citation against you. Heck he might even be watching you now– trying to figure out how he can piss you off even more. You may be the next to have a restraining order placed against you. This I know because I have lived by some pretty strange people.
