5 coleman 237 lanterns

Postby cokebottle10 » Fri Aug 21, 2009 4:05 pm

I just bought 5 Coleman 237 lanterns at a yard sale. They all have a chrome tank. One of them is in very nice shape and the rest go down hill from there. I should be able to get two more out of the 5. Even if I only get one to work I will be happy.

Are they kerosen only? Or duel fuel? Can I use the coleman fuel? What do I use in the priming cup?

What is the best thing to use to polish the chrome?

Any help you guys can give would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
David.

Four of the five hold pressure. What would be the best way to clean the inside of the tanks? Lye soap with water, then vinegar to neutralize it? Will the lye hurt the nickel finish?

What would be the best polish to use on the outside?

Thanks,
David.

If you take them apart and want to clean the interior on the tanks, you can do it with BB's. They will knock loose any scale/rust in the tank. For polishing them up I use a metal polish I got at the auto paint shop, and a cloth wheel on the drill press. Be careful, you can burn through the nickel finish pretty quickly. You can always do it by hand too. Nice find, I don't have any of the kero lanterns. Doug

Hey David!

Wow! Great score! You gonna bring 'em over and show 'em off on Saturday?

Thanks guys,

The BBs are a good idea. I will try that. I have a polishing wheel and some rouges. I will try that on the one tank that has a small dent and will not hold pressure.

Hey Al, I will bring over one to let you see it.

Thanks,
David.

Just curious; has anyone used Super Rust Away? It's not acid so I use it to remove rust from mineral specimens as it won't damage calcite.
