Another Hill Country Surprise

Postby Larwyn » Fri Aug 28, 2009 10:03 pm

Lanza and i were entertained for a couple of hours this evening by a large group of birds that we do not normally see. The deer seemed to avoid them, as normally we have 15 or 20 deer in the open pasture behind the house, these birds seem to have taken their place tonight. The birds are not large enough (about a 3 foot wingspan) to be any real danger to deer, I guess they just spooked them into hiding out.

I did not take any pictures because I refused to miss any of the show by going in the house for a camera, and besides not being a photographer I would have been shooting clouds anyway. There were 20 or 30 of what I now believe to be Mississippi Kites diving for grasshoppers and cicadas in the open field behind the house, when they were not diving they would land momentarily in the trees in the back yard one would seem to be trying to steal food from another who landed just before. One of the larger ones was perched at the very top of a live oak tree throughout most of the show, when that one moved on, they all seemed to move farther away from the house. It was getting dark by then anyway so we came in and I tried to identify the birds on the internet, the pictures below look like the same birds to me and are Mississippi Kites. This rates as one of the best raptor shows I have ever seen and it was from my own patio, I love this Texas Hill Country.

Naw, like most (all?) migratory birds, they are protected. But they do eat a lot of bugs, so I reckon they earn their keep.

Wish we had some of those this way, might chase away the doves and seagulls.

I'll be in your neck of the woods in few weeks, camping at Kerrville Shriener-can't wait! :)

Really? I am at Kerrville Shriener Park 5 or 6 times a week to get my "daily" exercise on the hiking trails there. It's a great park and the deer and jack rabbits are fat this year. Actually saw a roadrunner there yesterday.
