How to determine axle location?

Ok someone check my math who has built on a new frame.
6' floor 7' body front to back no real galley other than a counter top .

7' would be 84" 84 x .375 (37.5%) would be 31.5" from the rear most point of the body. Is this correct?

Math is correct. But keep in mind what you want tow it with and the rated tongue weight capacity. You have a good starting point, until you add heavy cabinets in the front, maybe a tongue box, or other, and no galley for weight in the back and all of a sudden you may have to move that axle location.

Thanks Dan, This one will be about as strip down as they come don't plan a tongue box  maybe a little one now that you bring it up. So how much forward of that would be a good amount to allow?

Scott, that seems about right to me...keep in mind, a higher tongue weight is better than one which is too light(within limitations)...I wouldn't come more than a couple of inch's max...32-33 seems to be about on the money.......

simple solution to tounge weight

Postby eamarquardt » Sun Aug 30, 2009 12:09 pm

We've been over this road several times. My solution is to mount the springs on angle iron that is then bolted to the rails of the trailer's frame. when you are all finished you can load the trailer to travel config and get the exact balance you want (I tend to go for heavier tounge weight as long as it's within the specs of the vehicle and hitch/reciever). See pics in my album to see exactly what I'm talking about. I plan on mounting the fenders to the angle iron and will have only one bolt to hold the top of the fender to the side of the tear. So with undoing 6 bolts, I can move the whole axle assembly to where ever I desire.

My 2 cents.

Cheers,

Gus
