Hello from Western Nebraska

Postby gwooden » Fri Sep 04, 2009 10:43 pm

Been looking at this site for a while now and just got around to joining. We don't have a teardrop yet, decided to build our own. Bought the Kuffel creek Comet plans but I'm not sure that trailer will ever get built after looking at everything this site has to offer.
The initial plan is to start building this fall/winter when I have some spare time. I want to have it ready for spring camping, but after reading some of the other posts it looks like it could take from 3 months to 3 years.
I'm hoping sooner rather than later. The first step has been taken, the axle is ordered. The adventure begins.

Welcome gwooden,
If tearbuilding is anything like boatbuilding, you will have more fun if it takes years instead of months.
Seriously, all of the little custom details that you make it your own with, that is a lot of fun thinking about, finding odd parts, trying find an item that was made for one thing, that you can use for something else.
But don't get discouraged before you start. Since it seems that finishing (sanding, sanding, sanding) and outfitting seem to be the most time consuming part of the build. Just build only what you need to start camping. You can always add MORE later!
Peace,
Rhett

Welcome to the forum, you have come to the right place for encouragement and helpful hints. I elected not to build a wooden airplane, some years ago, and began construction of a teardrop trailer instead. A good choice, I must say. Bear in mind that all teardrops are not finished with the quality of a Stienway piano, some are built to use, go together fairly quickly and work just as well as show-piece. Camping earlier in a tear is much more fun than working on one for years and then finally camping in a flawless creation. Good luck, ask questions and keep us up to date with pics.

If you don't like to sand. then don't build a woody. Come to think of it, it's great exercise! Any who do what makes you feel good. Me myself I'm already planing what my third trailer is going to be. And I just finished my first one. I love this stuff!!!!

Hey gwooden,
I started with a TSC no-floor frame and then 4 months and 1900.00 I had the "Costta Lotta" You can check out my build/camp photos here-- http://s215.photobucket.com/albums/cc145/panheadjohn60/ I didn't have any plans--just idea of what I wanted and ideas from other's T/D's here.
Building is a great way to relax and learn alot about woodworking.
Til later by the fire--John T & Linda 8)

Thank you for the words of encouragement and advice. I have enlisted the help of a friend to weld the trailer together. He could not imagine the trailer from my description so I showed him a picture on the plans I have.
He laughed and called it "cute", but he is still going to weld the frame for me.
