and its a little crooked but once the latch is installed on the bottom it should fit snuggly, my problem is that I can't seem to figure out how to get it attached at the top

Image

I have tried adding a 1x2 as you can see, so it will match up with the top piece (which i also had to change from a 1x2 to a 1x3) so that I can used the hurricane hatch that i got.

If you need any additional pictures please let me know I will post them!

This is how I wen about it...

You will want to have both the roof and the hatch skinned before you install your hinge. Then, whatever sealing material (rubber, etc), so the mounting screws go through the hinge, rubber seal skin and into the 1X2 structure.

Put your hatch skin on while it is secured in place -- not off the camper -- to make sure the hatch will fit properly when done.

The hinge goes on when the surfaces are finished, so that you can make a good water seal.

Just make sure at the hatch side, and the body side you are screwing the hinge into solid wood. You can screw through the outer plywood, but just make sure you have that backed up with solid wood and not just plywood only.
