new guy in Boone NC

Postby steve smoot » Wed Sep 23, 2009 9:33 am

Hi everyone,

I joined a few days ago. So far, I have not added any pictures, just been looking and dreaming. I am 63, retired. My 84 year old mom lives with the wife and I. Mom does not get around well, so my job is to take care of her. The wife is younger and still teaches school. We have two dogs and two cats. We live in the beautiful mountains of Boone NC. That's nice.

I found one camper that's of interest to me (actually, I found a couple hundred). It was built by DougH, a member from California. Doug used a TSC 4x8 trailer #1000215, and built a 5x8 wood frame. The camper is basically a 5x8x5 box with a cot for one person. This is all I need, as the wife does not care for camping, nor bluegrass music. I say that is her loss, and my gain...LOL... :D

Well, I promise to add some pictures later. That could be considered a threat, as my picture has been know to scare small children...LOL...

Take care,

Steve

You can be sure that anything built by Doug will be of the highest quality and workmanship.

Welcome aboard, Steve.

Boone/Blowing Rock, NC, is one of the most beautiful places on the east coast that I have ever visited.

Good luck with the build.

Is this the one Steve? Not mine, but a fun little build, DougH also makes a great teardrop racer. Good luck with your project. Doug

Hi Bill,

I will be trying my hand at building. I found another camper made very similar to DougH's and they did the shell and finished the inside later. I like that idea, as I can camp as I go. The only draw back is, I really wanted to finish the interior walls before doing the ceiling, etc. Well, you can't have everything...LOL... :(

take care,

Steve

Welcome from down the road in Chapel Hill.

Tons of info on this site so you can build beyond what you think you're capable. Someone can answer any questions you have.

Welcome from Asheville, NC

Postby Alfred » Wed Sep 23, 2009 4:16 pm

Hey Steve,

Welcome from down the road in Asheville! We get to Blowing Rock once in awhile, we were there a couple of months ago to take the kids to see Thomas the Tank Engine at Tweetsie Railroad.

I am about 2/3rds through building a small camper with bunk beds to sleep 5 of us! (See link to build thread below).

This is a great hobby, I've really enjoyed building it, I've met some great people at regional TD gatherings, corresponded with some great folks here on the list from all over the world.

When I get stuck, they help me get unstuck. A lot of good feedback.

There are also several enthusiasts and builders in the Western NC area. Have fun and be sure to keep us updated, post pictures! Let me know if you ever get down to Asheville and maybe we can get together for a cup of coffee and talk campers. And we love the Bluegrass/Old Time/Mountain Music!

Hi Alfred,

That's a big ten-four on Bluegrass/Old Time/Mountain Music...

I looked at your album a day or two ago. I'm looking forward to seeing it finished. I know those kids can not wait much longer. Oh, I really liked that community center workshop. That is a nice idea.

The wife and I have season passes to Biltmore, but they expire in December and we have only managed two visits all year! We had planned to visit at least once per season, but that did work out too well...LOL...

Take care and hope too see you guys one day soon.

stalked yours for sometime now too, I want to build on a 4x8 on a tight budget, but now thinking after we have had twins maybe I should be a bit more bold and go for a 5 seater as well.....to many choices.....I am still thinking teardrop for the 2 girls and wife, and the boys outside in a tent might be the way to go....
