Hello from NM...want to build a mini camper

Postby Minicamper42 » Wed Sep 23, 2009 11:22 pm

I just want to say what a great website ya'all have here...full of so much useful information!...I am looking forward to discussing about all kinds of build ideals and subjects...I first wanted a Teardrop trailer, but after thinking about my plans to go extreme into nowhere land I will need something a little bigger for more gear and more then just a weekend...I am very attracted to the Compact trailer that has the roof that raises up...I love the ideal of having the porta-potie for long trips but would like to build a small enclosed tub for a quick shower so I was thinking of maybe extending the rear another 12-16" to get the shower enclosure too.

Here is some of my camp requirements...need enough food and clothing for a 4 day weekend for 2 adults and 1 small dog...bathroom for the desert trips and A/C for those hot muggy nights...I know you guys are going to say just buy a full size trailer, but I don't want one...I want to be compact and light to climb the steep hills as well as low profile too...plus I don't have 7-9 grand to buy someone else's problem...if I build it, I know it will be done right to my satisfaction, not to some assembly worker who doesn't give a rip about what it looks like.

So I will post some questions elsewhere

Keep Perusing the site, there are many that have built their "Teardrops" with airconditioning, add a small side-tent and you have a bathroom -changing room. Just think about what you want, what you need and start blending the two.

Now of late I've noticed that a few of the newbies are confussing the two kinds of trailers that we deal with here and it really makes no difference, but it helps when asking questions....
Teardrop; too short to stand upright in, with an outside galley usually accessed by a rear hatch...clasic is 4X8X4, now 5X9 or even 5X10 are very popular.
TTT or Tiny Travel Trailer; usually just big enough to stand, with an inside galley and possibly inside pumbing. usually based on one of the canned hams from the Fifties and early Sixties.

Now, go over the lists that your working on, maybe even layout your gear,
put your ideas to paper or now-a-days, lay it out on the computer....and
build just what you want.

Welcome to the madness

Hey, Welcome to the group!

I look forward to seeing your progress on the build. When mine is finished, I think one of the coolest things is going to be able to tell people - Its home-made! T'ain't another one exactly like it anywhere.

I like the ideal of paying as I go so I too can say it's paid for...as long as you don't charge anything on a CC...I look forward to seeing all your projects done...I will try to keep the build time in a years time, maybe less...I am such a perfectionist that it takes me awhile to do a simple task, even if you don't see the part I'm building cuz it's hidden in the wall...I believe that if you do things right the first time, they will do their job better and last longer....right?

If you are the perfectionist, then it's best you do build your own.

You'll enjoy all the new skills you learn too. Wish I could build one. No garage, no driveway, no how.

I don't have any of these either...the weather here in NM is pretty fair most of the year, so my plan is to collect all build materials and store in the shed and THEN I will build it during the nice weather months and have it weather tight before the next winter...at least that's my plan...I also have access to a warehouse I might ask to use...I love the single cab...had a '59 once 'bout 22yrs ago.
