Am I responsible for my trailer after I sell it

I built my trailer for myself with the best parts that I could afford. Now I'm thinking of building a standie. If I were to sell my teardrop. How long would I be responsible for that trailer. Would I be liable for any problems down the line. What do you Manufacturers do?

That feels like a really good question.
I am sure that manufacturers are going to have to carry liability insurance.

The real question is what is the liability for a trailer with a home built title? If you sell it and it causes an accident, are you liable? Any lawyers out there?

My gut says the liability is probably not the same as that of a manufacturer.

It would be a shame to loose the farm over a teardrop exploding on the highway.

...you do not have a responsibility such as a manufacturer has...they have to build to certain specs mandated by the government and in an accident, these specs are checked to see if they measure up...you are under no such obligation...whenever I sell something similar, I always state on the bill of sale, this unit is sold as is with no warranty made or implied.........

I agree with MadJack. When I sell stuff on eBay, I make it very clear that the item is in good working condition, but it is sold "As Is, No Warrantee."

Clearly that is the case. I'm no lawyer... but I did stay at a Holiday Inn.

Oh man, your teardrop is great. To bad I live so far away. If you are looking to travel to Nevada and sell your teardrop at a low price, please consider me.

I would not hold you responsible for anything after the sale.

Two ways I work it.

If the trailer is over a year (or a season) old I sell it with a disclaimer much like Jacks...

"This unit is sold as is with no warranty made or implied".........

But when I sell a new Bare Bones trailer they are designed and built to fit directly on a Tractor Supply Frame.

I have the customer buy and title the frame in there name and bring it to the shop.

That way Tractor Supply warrants the frame Axle wheels, springs etc and not me...as it should be.

I'm only responsible for the body.
