Once when I was in vet school I was driving down a little two lane road outside of College Station. There was a pickup in front of me with a dog in the back. The pickup hit a large bump in the road ejecting the dog from the bed of the pickup and into the ditch (thankfully not the roadway). The truck didn't even slow down. I stopped and found the dog sitting dazed in the ditch. The only visible injury was that the entire skin on her lower jaw was torn off and just hanging down. I waited a while with the dog hoping the truck driver would return. He never did. I took the dog to the vet school and they patched him up. Don't know if they ever found the owner (no collar or tags).

Still pisses me off to see dogs loose in the back of pickups. :x

He would find furniture, appliances, a lot of stuff abandoned by students when they moved, etc. left out as trash. He would take it home, clean it up, spray paint it if needed, change a broken cord, nail/screw/glue stuff back together, etc. then on weekends he would sell it at the flea market.

He claimed to me that he made enough money to live on and make his house payment.

I got one that I'm glad I didn't find on the side of the road -- planovet's story made me remember it.

One late evening, SWMBO and I are driving to Santa Barbara, north on the 101 around Camarillo (Near harbor frieight tools...)

There was a full-sized van in front of us, and we notice that there was a cat on the roof of the van. Yup, a live cat. On the slick roof of a van going 60-70 mph.

Needless to say, we flashed/honked/etc and the driver of the van pulls over. Terrified cat luckily stayed on the roof, the driver gets out and we point out to her that the cat was on the roof. She coaxes the cat off and thanks us. A short conversation yeilded that the cat often slept on the van's roof, but it had never gone for a ride before.

To this day I'm suprised I didn't find that cat as an ex-cat on the side of the road.

Yeah, but did you ever think someone could make a living at it?

...actually I know of a few who have done quite well doing just that...of course, if you live in the deep woods, you can do something like that and make a living at it......

Postby laoutdoorsman » Mon Sep 28, 2009 6:11 pm

yeah, must be a louisiana thing....because i know quite a few people making a living (or funding their "habits") doing that kinda stuff....the bigger flea markets around here are full of resale booths made up of mostly "reclaimed" items...it has declined over the years, but still goes on...

ill admit to keeping an eye out on the sides of the road...i have embarrassed my kids , and a girlfriend or 2, once or twice, by stopping to "investigate" and interesting looking pile of stuff...

Can't figure out why he said he didn't have one. It's not illegal. ...Is it?

ask Lisa about shovels.. 8)

I have also found things I kept.. odds and ends of tools mostly I guess. My wife recently brought home a roll of insulation she saw fall off a trailer. she tried getting the guy to stop.. and tried finding him.. then brought it home.. :D

My hubby and I were coming home one night, and just up the road about 2 miles, found a truck tire. Probably a spare that bounced loose. Hubby was excited, it fit a couple of our trucks!
