Undercoating

Postby SATEAR » Fri Oct 02, 2009 10:42 pm

What is the consensus on undercoating the floor and frame?

I've seen several posts using spray on car undercoating....saw some tonight at the box store and it says it is only for metal and not wood????

I've also seen several posts using roof tar. Saw some tonight also and can says will adhere to wood but not metal????

What do I use. My floor is ready on my '47 Kitt Rebuild but need to undercoat first before attaching to frame.

I used Tetroseal paint on car underseal > Image

I used a full half litre tin on the 4' x 8' floor and it has done a really good job. Providing your floor is painted first with a good oil based paint (to act as a kind of primer), most underseal's should adhere fine. The pic below shows my undersealed floor, although it is dificult to see:

You'll probably get many different replies.

I di use the automotive undercoating. It took about 3 cans at $8 per can to coat, but I the coat was very thin. I did use 2 coats of CPES and one coat of epoxy before the undercoating was applied. This is probably overkill.

On #2, I plan to use one epoxy coat and then a coat of asphalt fence paint.
