Coleman Catalytic Heater

Can anyone give me any information on this heater?

I am just curious how it works, how old it might be, are they safe to use in a small but ventilated area? I've already got a 502 stove and a dual burner 413 I think. They're both dated from the mid '70s. I'd like to get this but just don't know much about them. I thought it'd be good to add to my collection.

We had one 36 years ago, you start it by poring white gas (Coleman fuel) on it and lighting it. lots of heat and you do NOT want it in an enclosed space.

I have two of them one larger that yours and one the same size as yours. I would not use it in an enclosed area. They smoke quite a bit after it is first lit. To light it I fill with fuel, then turn it upside down until the fuel soaks onto the wick and light it. To put it out, use the snuffer. My large one was missing the snuffer, but I use a aluminum bowl.

I found out it is the 512-700 model. I plan on using it under my awning while camping. The trailer I'm building will only have a rooftop tent so I don't think I'll be using any heaters in there.

It looks good and for the price I dont' think I can go wrong. The guy also has an aluminum box for my 502-700 Sportster so I think I will get that as well.

The catalytic heaters and the wick type Kerosene ones put out a lot of humidity and moisture. If heating a shop with them nice iron tops on the tools may want to rust. Until I insulated the roof on the garage in Denver, it would heat up the area, and the moisture would gather on the nails on the shingles that were poking through and it would drip in the garage. Used one of those in a our tent back in the early 80's. Worked ok in the tent because of the breathable walls. But my friend had asthma and it irritated the @#&* out of him. Probably the fumes from the white gas burning.

since I use c/g's or my generator, I use a electric heater... years ago, I did use a cat heater, but was always trying to strike a balance between being warm and getting asphyxiated....... never did care for them and glad they are in my past.

Well I got the heater in the mail yesterday. In talking with the seller, he also had a Coleman box for my sportster stove. The box is cool cause it converts into a small frypan and boiling pot.

In all, I paid $17 for the 2 items and they each came with original paperwork.
