Saw an add on Craigslist this last Friday that was from the previous Wednesday. 2 days old. Gave the number a call and left a message on their machine. No answer after several days.
Out of the blue late this afternoon I get a call from the owners of a #7 10 1/4" X 3" DEEP hunk of cast iron I have no idea who made. My wife calls it a chicken fryer.
The owner asked me "what I was actually going to do with it?" I told her.
The rust in the bottom took all the seasoning but I was able to make all the rust go away. Turned out ok so I have it some heat and oiled it up.
Things look promising.

Nice skillet!

Today at the city-wide yard sale in Jacksonville, OR I saw a 20" cast iron skillet. It was too heavy to pick up by its single handle or I would have purchased it!

There's no making Dean jealous. He owns a now-discontinued 22" Cabela's Dutch oven for Pete's sake! Besides, I would have bought the skillet and given it to him if it had a secondary handle/grip like even some new 14 inchers do.

You should come out next June and/or August and camp with us M. (Jefferson State Tearjerkers).

Isn't that right gang?

I think there was another thread about the monster dutch ovens a awhile back. There was an unused 20" Texsport at the flea market yesterday. I didn't even stop walking 'cause I need that like a hole in the head. Besides they typically want too much at the flea market. The "Griswold" guy was right across the way and would have scarfed it up if it was a bargain anyway.

I was in the "Bargain Cave" at Cabela's though and bought a 5 gallon iron pot that was in there because the aluminum lid was dinged up (they don't offer an iron lid apparently.) They sell 5 and 10 gallon versions. These are mini versions of the old witches brew type kettles. It has the loops cast in for a bail, but no bail. So I guess I need to forge up a bail and a tripod for over the fire while I'm at it.

Then I'll be compelled to make up a monster batch of chili for the Halloween party.

How did you determine that?

There was a lot of interest and posts on the Wagner and Griswold Society site several years ago on Birmingham Stove and Range cookware. I've gotten to know the typestyle and style of their markings. I think the foundry closed in the late 1980s. Atlanta Stove and Range was somehow tied in with Birmingham I think and they, too, may have made some of the same cookware for a while.

If you look at the handle profile from the underside it will be of an angular or triangular shape on the BS&R skillets. They are the only pans I am aware of that used that handle shape on the underside. It's a wonder what one can learn from the backside of anything, people included. Why are photos of cars almost always from the front? The back and sides are pretty interesting as well.
