Apple Press and Homemade Apple Juice

Postby Classic Finn » Tue Oct 06, 2009 12:04 pm

Here in Finland as many other place around the world, fall has brought a lot of apples to preserve and make juice and jellies from. And we have apples from the parents that fill the house.

My question is. How do you folks make your home made apple juice?
Here we take it to a central apple collection cooperative and they will quickly press apples into some delicious juice ready to enjoy. Of course the price is quite high so thats why I thought to ask as to how you folks make it at home? Do you have apple presses or ?

Any good companies that sell them there?

We use this type of masticator juicer, rather than a centrafuge juicer. A bit more prep on the produce, but a better method.

Hello and Greetings Cliff  That is really an impressive juicer.
I see it also can be purchased at 120V/60Hz or (Optional 220V)
However we have 50Hz here at 220 v. for normal house hold current so dont know how the cycles would affect it. :)

Best regards to you

now days if we want fresh the wife uses her high powered electric juicer. It does work well for a modern piece.

But when I was a kid we had one of the old style wooden presses. That made apple juice like nothing can today. My aunt still has one that they plan on restoring and using again. The patent date on the screw base is 1883 if I recall correctly. Looks alot like this one :D

A bit late getting to this thread, but Kevin Hauser of Kuffel Creek Press
home of the Cubby Teardrop plans. Also has plans for a beautiful clasic apple press (thus Kuffel Creek Press)

Here is an apple crusher and juicer. That I found that reminds me of the ol times.

This sight is in several languages however not in English but you can see from the photos and short video as to how it works.

This is sold by an Estonian Company however I think its Italian by its name.

Some of you of Swedish or Norwegian decent may be able to understand the writing below as it opens up to the Swedish language. :D :) Some of the words are very close to the English language. ;)

Samuel makes a mean lookin' pie! One thing I enjoy the most is making apple pies. I don't have a juicer but I do have an apple peeler that works great. Seeing those yummy (and adorable) pictures makes me want to go get some apples and make a couple.

For Christmas, I make apple pies and buy some pie plates that have the recipe on them or some really nice pie plate and give them as presents to neighbors. Or I make a few different cookies and buy a nice holiday plate to give. To me, there's nothing more special than receiving something homemade.

Heikki,

The last time we had surplus apples, we took them to the local Amish community where we traded a percentage of the cider for the service.
They kept the pressings too, for the hogs.
Seems it was somewhere around 25-35%

There are several companies that make cider presses, but it sure is a lot of work to make cider from bushels and bushels of apples... besides pressing, you must grind up the apples, then press, then strain, then bottle, then clean up a really big mess!

Check E bay, there are several designs available.

The Apple press in the link you provided is identical in design to the one I grew up using.
What didn't go in the press went into the kettle to make Apple Butter.
I like anything that turns money into noise.
