roof edge molding - sealant question

Getting ready to add the roof edge molding in next couple of days. Is there a recommended method such as using butyl tape under the trim or using a silicone - or something else?

A lot of people use silicone. I hate the stuff and use something called Lexel. It's water clear, cleans up with paint thinner, and is paintable. Silicone isn't clear, is a bear to clean up, and won't take paint.

I used hi-tek stuff on the first one...on the second, I used standard RV butyl tape...pulled it over the edges and then applied the trim...inexpensive, will stay pliable/hold a seal for a long time and is removable if needed.........

silicone sealant - just a nasty mess destined to fail

If you have any plywood end grain exposed, it is a good idea seal it with several coats of epoxy.

Hello Kansas City and Greetings from the Country of Finland.

Butyl Tape is also used on our tear. However with a small exception or slight mod. Here I used RV Molding with a 2 in 1 Rubber Seal with Butyl Tape on the bottom side. No leaks at all. Notice the thin layer of plastic. That is peeled off as you set the seal/butyl tape down under the moulding.

Appreciate all the advice - decided to use the butyl tape for sealing - easier than the messy silicone stuff. Used the butyl tape for the hurricane hatch hinge and the result was a "good looking" install and no mess. On the contrary I used silicone to seal around the vent fan as per mfg instructions and my caulking skills looks like #$@%. Oh well, it's on the roof where most people can't see it up close and as long as it doesn't leak it will be fine.
