I am determined not to turn on the heater...

Postby caseydog » Mon Oct 12, 2009 1:20 am

It happens twice each year. In May, I am determined not to turn on the AC until I just can't take it. And, in October, I resist turning on the heat.

It is 65 degrees in my house right now, and 55 outside. BUT, the forecast is for a high of 91 on Wednesday. So, I am not going to do it. I have my teardrop heater in the bathroom so I can heat that room up to take a shower in the morning, so let it get cold in the house.

The heater is off, the AC is off. The energy industry is not making any money off me right now. I wish it would last all year long.

So, is this my personal obsession, or does anyone else go kicking and screaming into this annual change of the HVAC system?

CD

We try and hold out as long as possible. It is 39 degrees outside and 64 inside without the heat turned on.

Our goal is to hold out until at least Nov. 1st

I have done research on fetishes and BDSM and the, don't turn on the heat/AC till it is... comes under the masochism label as far as I am concerned :NC
It is 41F outside and 70F inside today and I am keeping it that way. Big swings in temperature leave you more open to diseases and considering what is going around.

CD!

Sorry, but your're obsessed. Look at all the things we do to make life more comfortable. Wider teardrops, running water, memory foam mattress, recliners, alcohol, etc, why draw the line at heat and air. If you want to go without heat, why not go all winter, what makes a paticular date important? :D

No need to have the heater on yet - is it freezing ? are the pipes in jeopardy? - heck in the REALLY cold season in Texas the day time high will be either 60 or 70 degrees and we'll love it- It ain't cold yet 8)

I had the A/C on last week for 1 day, but refused to light a fire in the wood stove 2 days later  Like CD, I used a small electric in the bathroom, but the rest of the house is cool.

I just bought another house, it has central a/c.... when turned on, the electric meter spun like a helicopter rotor in mid flight... I bought 2 window units.. both 5k... one for the living room, one for the bedroom.

The meter runs way slower with only one unit on.. and I put drapes up across the appropriated door ways so I only a/c the living room during the day or the bed room at night...

my bill stayed around 70 dollars all summer. It would be a lot lower, but I have to run a dehumidifier to keep my damp basement from getting all moldy.

I do the same thing with heat.... using the drapes, I can heat only the living room, or living room and kitchen, or living room and my modeling room. The house is old and probably has no insulation in the original part (built in 1936), so expect my heating bill will be.... noticeable.

Me too!
When I finally turn either on, I go for the least amount possible (lowest heater or highest AC comfortable setting) and wait to see if my body can adjust to that. After all, not only is it saving energy but also, a dollar saved here is a dollar that can be spent somewhere else! (Trailer builds?) :applause:

Trailer builders seem to be a tough and practical breed of people.
I've seen my non-trailering neighbor turn on the AC when it's 69 degrees outside!
