New season of This Old House...

Postby caseydog » Thu Oct 15, 2009 8:12 pm

I've watched the first two episodes of the 30th season of TOH, and I am very pleased to see them go back to their "roots," so to speak.

There are doing a modest upgrade and renovation of a real old house. As I posted last year, I was pretty peeved that they seemed to be building a multi-million dollar mansion for some uber-rich family. Darn near everything they featured that season was way beyond the average person's reach.

This season seems to be something I can actually get ideas from.

So, any other TOH fans seen the new episodes?

What do you think?

I'd quit watching it a few years ago when it became "This Old Mansion" so, I'll have to give it a try again.

Casey Dog,
I stopped watching when it got all yupped up. Good to here they are getting back to basics. I live in a 135year old victorian house. So for me I don't need to know about the latest cork flooring from china  I need the old school stuff

I've seen the first two episodes also and I have to agree with the Dog. I like it much better than previous seasons. A 70 year old house, a reasonable budget and some renovations that acutally make sense.

Good to hear that they have scaled back. Maybe they really do read their emails!

I second the "how old am I".....the wife and I were married back in 1980. I believe it was TOH's first year...we watched the show every saturday, rain or shine...we had an old farm house located in the historical district of Statesville NC back then...we got over it, and started building new ones, much easier...

I don't watch much TV now days, but I will check out the new TOH. To bad they didn't bring back ole Bob Villa....I guess he owns Sears now...LOL...

Are they on their 3rd host? Interesting that the current host, who has gotten much better at his job, was actually found because he was one of their projects.

I did watch it last night, and it is much more interesting than that mansion they did over on the lake a couple of years ago... which lasted almost one whole season.

And last season's modular house.

This business of "sweat equity" was a farce too. They haven't had any sweat equity from their house owners since John and Clare's half-Cape.

I like the current host, kevin. He does not pretend to know more than he really does. I think Norm and Tommy like him, too. They pick on him, a bit, but you can tell they like him and his willingness to get his hands dirty and learn from them.

Watched about 1/2 hour of the webcam today - Tom Silva Really does his own work! - not just a camera shot then when the camera is off, another team comes in and finishes up. A real behind the scenes view of the work being done

I remember the first episode I saw: Norm and Bob were fixing up the basement of what looked to be a fifties crackerbox, furring out concrete walls with 1x2's. I actually learned how to do something other than use the latest technology.

Best,

I used to get tickled everytime Bob would go through the completed house with the decorator. Everything would be just so, and Bob would have to put his hand on stuff. He'd straighten a stack of "artfully" arranged magazines. Pull out a drawer and not quite close it. Pull drapes to the side. Turn a vase of flowers, showing the stems on the back. I could see the decorators biting their tongues.
