Teardrop Profile Comparison

Postby aggie79 » Fri Oct 23, 2009 8:54 am

As I was looking through my notes last night, trying to find some measurements I worked out for the next part of my build, I found this sketch I did when I was in design mode.

Image

It is a sketch of many profiles from the design library and my approximation of the profile that Gern Blanston built (three times) shown below.

Image

All of the profiles were appealing to me. I couldn't make up my mind, and hoped the sketch would show big differences in the profiles, but I was surprised to find that all were closer in profile than I thought.

In the end, the profile I used was very similar to the Gern's design, with a little "fuller" galley area and smaller radius at the bottom of the galley.

Hi, Tom:

Surprisingly, when I opened this posting, that is exactly what I was thinking about, how nice it would be to see all the different shapes superimposed onto each other.

Thanks for sharing this. :applause:

Does anyone have a larger picture of this one or has someone did something similar in a CAD program?

I decided to put some of the profiles on a Sketchup file. Here are all of the ones that I did on one picture. I did not label them and all of them kind of jumble it up, but I can turn off the profiles that I do not want to compare.

Does anyone have the layout demisions for the Cubby and Comet profiles?

Dan,

Very nice work on the profiles! Sure beats that chicken scratching sketch I did. I think I may have some other profiles. I look for them later today.

Take care,
Tom

I've found that with some schedule 125 1/2" pvc pipe and some conduit clamps it's easy to lay out profiles by clamping the pvc to a piece of plywood.

I'm not finished but this will give you the idea. The blue masking tape is for bulkheads, doors, etc.

Cheers,

Gus
