windows 7

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Postby Wig » Fri Oct 23, 2009 9:11 am

Well I got it done.I had two set backs.first one was video card drivers.Windows 7 was set in hi resolution. So I had to run it in safe mode till I Installed the driver for the video card.the harder part is that my usb's in the back of the computer weren't working and I didn't know it.So I had to go borrow a old ps2 keyboard to get in the bios.and I found out that that was because of a after market motherboard. I got all going with a fresh install and its running nice.I was running vista 64 and was totally happy with it.I think the reason most people weren't happy with vista is because they don't run enough ram.I have 8 gigs and with vista it used 30% just with the internet. Now with the windows 7, 18%.I was in no hurry to switch, but a of mine is a mac guy and got it with a school discount for 30 buck.My old stuff was quick but I can tell this is a little faster.and I also like the layout better.

I'm still running Vist (64 bit), guess I need to take advantage of that free offer for 7 also. Especially if it will let me run some of the old programs that Vista will not. Other than the fact that it will not run a couple of my old programs I really like Vista, but it sounds like 7 might be the way to go. I've only been using Vista for about a week since I got a new laptop to replace an older XP laptop which was on it's last leg.

This is Windows 7 with the following windows open.
9 Internet Explorers
3 MS Word
1 Task Manager
1 Resource Monitor
1 Outlook
4 MS Excel

I'm still testing and changing the hardware. I plan on going to 8 gigs and changing the boot drive to an Intel 160 Gig Solid state drive.

I had it while it was in beta and liked it though it was a bit confusing in places. Installed the final version the other day and goofed. Forgot to disconnect my primary drive before installing on the secondary so it didn't format the drive, just installed on top of an old xp soooooo, start over, do it again........... Oh well, it's a relatively quick install anyways.
While it was running I did find things much smoother and quicker and I'm running an AMD Athlon dual core 5000+ with 4 gig of ram so it's not like it was slow to start with, just seems much smoother than XP.

COMPUTER CRASH :throw PC:

I was forced to start using the free, UBUNTU operating system when Windows XP crashed on my desktop. It is a BEAUTIFUL development from a LINUXkernel.

After three weeks of using it exclusively, I have to say I'M NEVER GOING BACK TO WINDOWS.

It's free. It doesn't need anti-virus. It doesn't require much time to figure it out and use it. I comes bundled with OPEN OFFICE SUITE and a lot more, so there's no need to buy additional software. The web browser is FIREFOX, also free. :D

Download it free:

There's even a version for kids called Edubuntu, and a version for netbooks called Ubuntu Netbook Remix (which I just had put on my Acer Netbook).

Spend money for the latest version of DOS with a GUI, more techno-glitches and a big memory and processor hog from MS?

Instead, I think I'll get a t-shirt:.

Well, I bit the bullet. I went and bought Windows 7. I loaded it up on my purple PC, the one that I use for playing.

(My CAD workstation still has XP, and my Mail/Browsing machine is a Mac)

I've only been playing with Win7 for a couple days now, but so far it seems like a nice upgrade. The first two programs I installed were Firefox and Thunderbird.

Since I am not familar with Vista, I have to learn where they moved everything to...

But I need to use windows, because I have a ton of Windows apps, some that I consider critical.

I orderd a new laptop with windows 7 several weeks ago and it was delivered on the 22nd. So far it has worked great with no issues. Hopefully it will continue to do so and then I may just spring for a upgrade for my PC.

I put the 64 bit version of 7 on both of my home systems, did a clean install, went very smooth. So far it has not given me any problems. My database programs are working smoothly and I am impressed with the speed. both boxes are less than two years old, no compatability issues with anything, it all works.

I think what I like about it the most is the library.its nice to be able to keep up with photo's and stuff with out having to have them in the same spot.before it would feel more like digging for stuff.

+1 on the t-shirt

Ubuntu is fantastic, and even better with Google Chrome as the browser. I've been using Ubuntu exclusively at home for several years and have a couple servers at work running it. I can't remember the last time I paid for any software, or even needed to.

I had my first Vista experience with my sisters laptop last week - after viewing a slideshow from her trip to the UK it choked and was stuck in low color, at low resolution - it took an unplugging and removing the battery to restore the graphics - I don't miss Windows one bit.

BTW I fail to see the need for most people to have more than 1GB of ram just to surf the web, use email and watch a few movies. Sure there is a place for windows just not on my computers. :)

Ubuntu 10.04 came out today. I downloaded it, but won't get around to installing it anytime soon.
