4' vs. 5' wide?

Postby georgedombeck » Sun Oct 25, 2009 7:46 pm

Hey guys, I just started my tear build. I cut out my walls in the ultralight profile. Now I need to figure out whether to build it 4' or 5' wide. Will be staying in this tear by myself and occasionally with my wife. Looking for pros and cons of the two widths. thanks, george

Boy!! How many times has this been asked. :D It's all to do with what you want George. Personally I would never build a 4'er again. Too squeezy for me and the Handbrake.

Cheers

Funnily enough, most of what you are thinking has probably had a poll done on it.

I've owned/built a couple of 4' wides and even with just me....I'd go wider. I now build a tear 4'6" ...yeah...only 6" more, but makes it a seem a lot wider. Just for grins...move some boxes to block off a space 4' wide and the length you want, lay down in it with your wife and see what you think. You can't really do it with a line on the floor as it doesn't give you the impression of how the sides will effect the perspective. Most will go 5' or at least wider than 4. Some people build a 4' because it's easy to pick up a HF frame for it. If you are going to put the time and effort into it...build what fits your needs and what will keep the Missus happy, even if she doesn't go that much.... ;) Doug

If you have the $ for a little more material, it[s 5 wide all the way. Never considered a 4 and are really glad we did. There is so much more counter space, inside space, storage space. I think there are very few, if any, that regret going 5 wide, but MANY Many who wish they had.

Have to agree with Debbie completely on this one
My wife and I have no qualms about our sleeping in our 4 wide, but we sleep in a full-bed every night, gave up the California King years ago.
But, it was designed for me and getting my telescopes to the desert, not general camping with the missus.
But when we are both camping, we need more storage, more galley, just a bit more everywhere, love my 4X8, probably won't sell it, may go to one of the kids, but the next one, will be 5x10, if not one of Grant's Campster 12's

8) Double bed, four wide...that is about the size of two adults sleeping side by side in two cribs. Believe me, cuz I have slept around! in many teardrop trailers, that is.

Go with a five wide if there are two of you.
It's easier to fill in the space if 5 is too wide, than to try to knock it out if you go 4 wide.

I made mine 5 wide after reading the polls and it is fairly roomy inside. Took it off road camping with a few friends and I let my friend from work stay in it. He,s 6' and 250 lbs and I,m 5'9" and 180 and it was fairly comfortable. There was about a foot of space between us :) [I found I like to sleep with my back up against the wall in the trailer]. I also gave it an interior height of 5'2" so you can stand up kind of to get dressed.

I vote for 5 wide too. I think it would help resale also if you ever wanted to sell it.

first, think of resale..... 5' better than 4'.... think of how wide it can be and still use your stock tow mirrors. Galley will have more room... yada, yada, yada.... Unless you plan on camping alone all the time, go with 5'..... even though I camp alone, I still need 5' for comfort and the two mutts...
