Can you recommend LED Interior Lights?

Postby Jerry Bleeg » Fri Oct 30, 2009 12:25 am

I am to the point of needing to wire and mount my interior dome lights and possibly reading lights. I want to go with low draw LED lights because I mostly camp in areas without electric and need my battery to last. Any recomendations for a double dome LED ceiling light that won't break the bank and give good general lighting? I like this one fine and the price is great but 11.00 for shipping seems a bit much.

How about a LED reading lights.

$11 go for it. I have some domelights from Boater's World (I didn't see them anymore). Having the switch mounted on them simplifies wiring.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here & say that isn't an LED light fixture :o . Page says it uses #921 bulbs which are regular incandescent, 'wedge' base 12v automotive type bulbs. You can of course, obtain LED 'bulbs' that will fit the sockets but that entails additional expense. Also, most LED's don't 'give' the kind of light that people want to live under. It's a very pure light but the color spectrum can be hard to get used to (unless you find just the right combo for your taste  ). They do make some good LED reading lights tho.

I use that exact light and it is not an LED as Nobody said. Battery draw is low however and not really sure it will make a difference over several days. You can use only one bulb at a time it will throw off plenty light. On the interior we use only the single bulb version of that light and the double in the galley plenty of light and if you are needing a reading light perhaps a battery powered LED AAA or AA reading light will throw enough out. We do not use the lights inside for long periods at a time I try to conserve but have never run the Deep cell down even with the DVD player and other acc.

Another consideration with LED lighting is "color hue" of light..... Most LED white lights actually have a bluish cast and when trying to read or see detail (repair fishing reel or whatever) do not have same illumination as incandecent lamps..... For "some" general lighting (so you don't stumble in dark) they are ok, but as I get older I find the type of illumination and intensity is important.... I really dislike most LED flashlights for this same reason....

I'm going all LED on my TD. I searched extensively for just the right LED lights. For me, they didn't exist, or were too pricey. I found some nice incandescent fixtures at the local RV supply and will replace the bulbs at my leisure with LEDs from this site:

This, as stated before was my best option for going all LED. Hope this helps...

I think 921 and 922 bulbs are about the same...

My porch light came with a 922 bulb...

here's a replacement LED Chell found at the auto parts store...

and here's an LED from Superbright LED...

LED light suggestions

Postby Jerry Bleeg » Fri Oct 30, 2009 10:32 pm

Many thanks for all the responses and advice. It sounds like LED may not be the best way for me to go at the time, but I like chorizon suggestion of going with the standard fixtures for now and upgrading to LED bulbs at a later time. I agonize over simple decisions like this especially when it comes to watts, volts, and amps. I am ignorant of these electrical terms and probably just not interested enough to learn. I found these Xeonon style lights that sound and look nice. I like the size, finish, quality, and price.

Would 20 Watts draw (2 bulbs x 10 watts ea.) be to much for a interior dome light?

A special thanks to Harvey (nobody) setting me straight on that prev. light not being LED and especially for sharing his tongue upgrade post. It worked great on my HF frame. One of these days, I will get around to posting some build pics.

I bought two of these http://www.bestconverter.com/Brass-Dome ... p_283.html and also the LED reading lamps http://www.bestconverter.com/Brass-LED- ... p_303.html

Not only does it cut down on the battery usage, but there is virtually no heat given off by an LED light.

Just curious , why two Dome lights. My tear will be Queen size on the inside. Are two needed? I understand the need for two reading lights.

I doubt two are needed.

The plans I am building from call for a two sided dome light, each side with its own switch. Since these are single lights, I bought two.

We have a reading light on each side and a dome light in the middle. We use one reading light or the other to light up the place as we're getting ready for bed. The dome light in the middle is good if we need to find something and need LOTS OF LIGHT to do it. We could have probably gotten away without all of those lights.

Best design I've seen was used in the Ford Maverick; dome light and individual map lights for driver/passenger. Go junkyarding!
