Am I crazy?

Postby Yakn1 » Fri Nov 06, 2009 11:00 pm

After reading so many posts, I have come to the conclusion that a 5X8 trailer is probaly the best starting point. I have a TSC 4x8 tilt. My question is..... could I add 2' to the front of the trailer and get a wider axle. Would this be worth the time and money, or just get a differant trailer, OR... AM I just crazy

Have you considered an over the wheel build. (NO fenders)

Here's one I did on a Harbor Freight frame, I think it would be easier on a Tractor supply.

This one is 64" wide on the inside (32X72 is a junior twin mattress size).

Its on a 4X8 Frame with out the wheel wells extending into the cabin.

There are many other examples.

Happy Trails

Here is my version of a 5 x 9 1/2' built on a TSC 4x8. I did not build all the way over the wheels, just made some fenders flares.

I did extend the tongue though

Here's my TSC 4X8 NF trailer frame
Floor: 5/8 inch plywood very sturdy and no need for framing beyond the actual trailer it self. I used a sub frame constructed out of 2x3 s to support the camper floor over the trailer The underside of the floor is painted to seal the plywood. I applied sheet Aluminum to the underside of the floor to protect it from road debris and water spray. Bolted the entire structure to the trailer.
Completed flooring

Look in my album. Mine is a 5x8 built on a 4x8 TSC frame. I left the fenders on and built over. It works.
Good day every day!

Am I Crazy

Postby Yakn1 » Sat Nov 07, 2009 9:30 am

I appreciate the replies...now I have to admit I screwed up :( .My trailer is 6' long, not 8'. So the question still is,can I safely extend the front? I'm very glad to see I can just run the floor past the width of the trailer - that would be a great help. Thanks gang

Be carefull ou don't get too tongue heavy.

Where there is a will there is a way, but by the time you get done chopping and welding, you might as well...

Just my $.02

That's what I thought. I had the exact same trailer. I decided not to use it on my build. It just seemed like it was going to cost me as much to make it work as I paid for the trailer, which IIRC was around 300 bucks, new.

First, you can't just make that trailer longer, you would also have to move the axle. Adding all of the two feet of length on the front is not practical. You would have a very short tongue.

Then you need to cut the sides of, and remove the mesh floor. I didn't want to mess with all that.

It's doable, but for me, it wasn't worth the hassle.

I think 5x8 or 5x10 cargo trailer with single axle tramp is best for you. 8)
